Five Independent Doha Restaurants Doing Home Delivery

$

This post is dedicated to the independent Doha restaurants and cafes who are still putting together out the great food and keeping us fed and watered.

It seems like we have been doing this self isolation thing a very long time. And perhaps we have. There is no denying times are tough for many and the hospitality industry has been doing it tougher than most. In my view the businesses in this post serve great food as well as importantly follow infection control measures. And with working long hours in the office(well for me anyway) all of them have also been a lifesaver.

So for when you just can’t make another home-cooked meal (Masterchef fatigue) or you just want a treat these five independent Doha restaurants doing home delivery during COVID-19#supportlocal

Mama Rozie

A perennial favorite of this blogger, this family business are continuing to serve their very loyal customers home cooked Indonesian, Malaysian and Filipino comfort food classics through the lockdown. They deliver through all of the main operators including Talabat, Wishbox and Fingertips. Check their lively instagram for daily specials during Ramadan.

Must order: Nasi Goreng chicken

Twisted Olive

In my view, one of the best newcomers this year, this bistro in West Bay has some of the most interesting food in the city. You can expect the usual salads, sandwiches and more substantial mains, but the execution and ingredients enable them to stand apart. The food has an Mediterranean slant and everything is made fresh and from scratch. They are now offering breakfast and lunch through Talabat.

home delivery in doha Twisted olive

Must order: The honey baklava cheesecake. Trust me on this.

Boho Social

Another one that has been on my radar before, but they have stepped up and out with a new special menu. I had previously enjoyed the food but found it “safe”. The new delivery menu has the hallmarks of a chef being told to cut loose and try new things. The result is some exciting food. A vegan-friendly bowl of roasted pumpkin with lentils, tahini dressing and finished with activated seeds is a blend of flavors and textures. Another surprise packet is their take on noodles – a spicy harrisa emulsion with udon noodles and sesame is familiar in that it’s comforting, but also revealing some unique flavor combinations. Call or whatsapp 77655285 for delivery.

Must order: For something very different try the bao bun ranchero with crispy chicken, dynamite sauce and pickled mayo.

BAO Doha

Another perennial favorite of mine, they are continuing to wow us with their soft and fluffy bao buns. They have a special Ramadan menu at the moment with baos infused with flavors like pomegranite and falafel. Order a couple of baos each and some starters like their tempura shrimp and gyoza and you have a great night in. They are available through all of the major delivery apps including Talabat, Carriage, Foody, Rafeeq and Trackoo.

Must order: the spicy falafel bao and the spicy shrimp one as well as the Japanese style corn.

Umami Burger

The much anticipated branch of the cult burger chain has finally opened after months of teasing. It’s a brave move opening and a restaurant in the current climate, but worth the wait. Located in Msheireb, I will admit I have a bit of an agenda with this – we are hoping to move to an apartment building next door after Ramadan (inshallah) and this will be our local! That said, there is a lot to like about their burgers. Flavors and ingredients are quite different to the multitude of burger joints in this town. The bread is soft and holds the fillings well – in fact, ours were delivered in perfect shape, no dripping or sloppiness to be seen. The Umami burger beef is good quality (perhaps a little dry for some but favorful) and stacked with crispy shitake mushrooms, roasted tomatoes and parmesan. A lot of rich flavors there but none were overwhelming – which is perfect. Another winner is their crispy chicken burger which is succulent and laden with pickles and coleslaw. They also offer Impossible (plant based) options as well as a turkey burger plus the usual sides. Delivery is fast through Foody.

Must order: Truffle fries and the chicken burger.

For other home delivery options check out my previous post here.

As with everything lately, do check the restaurant’s social media or give them a call to check timings and availability, especially during Ramadan. For those with concerns about using home delivery, check the Ministry of Public Health’s guide here.

I had a few people (honestly I did) ask why the longer than usual pause between posts. The answer is complicated. Firstly, work escalated quickly and I just didn’t have the mental bandwidth to sit down and write. I am not working from home, rather heading into the office each day and some of those days are long. Secondly, with so many people grappling with the complexity of what dealing with COVID-19 mean – the spread of the virus itself, self isolation, job losses, business closures, travel bans, uncertainty generally – it just seemed so trivial to be writing about food. But we seem to have settled (for want of a better word) into the “new normal” – for me that means a bit more of a routine as well as a chance to have some headspace to write and create again. So expect more this May!

What Will Doha’s Dining Scene Look Like Post-COVID-19?

$

We all joke about rushing the barricades and beating down the doors of our favorite cafes and restaurants (after the beauty salons of course) when they finally reopen. But what will Doha’s dining scene look like after the dust settles?

As we begin to eat out again when restaurants reopen, the question will be less about the food, and more so about what steps the restaurant has taken to ensure the health and safety of diners.

One thing is certain, it won’t be the same. But how will it have changed?

1. Fewer outlets

The sad reality is, many smaller (and maybe some bigger players) won’t be able to survive this period. Already we have seen Gordon Ramsay shutter his restaurants in Doha (although whether this is COVID-19 related is unclear). Expect others to follow suit.

2. It will take time…

You can’t just flip a switch and everything will go back to normal. Many hotels and restaurants have put staff on leave and many returned to their home countries to ride out the COVID storm. Outlets have been mothballed. Stores not replenished. It takes time to fire up, get cashed up and start operations again. Some venues will have to completely re-design their layouts to ensure social distancing. We all need some patience. It will be a slow roll out to help people adjust to a new, weird way of life.

3. Takeaway and delivery will remain popular

We all enjoyed the pivot many restaurants, including to big players, made into home delivery and takeaway. And with delivery platforms stepping up their hygiene and safety practises, it will remain a go-to option for many people. It also showed us that the restaurant experience, food-wise can be replicated at home.

Wu factor… @radissonbluhoteldoha is offering a short and sharp takeaway menu from their cult favorite Chinese restaurant Ruby Wu. Fun fact – this was the first restaurant I went to when I moved to Doha in 2007! Anyway, nostalgia is important as these are old school Chinese takeaway classics. We love the tender yet crunchy skinned crispy chicken as well as the tender braised pepper beef. Everyone loves a sweet and sour and this was one a great rendition – with slivers of pineapple and a tart/sweet sauce. Check my instastories for the menu. You can order by Whatsapp, you drive up and they bring to your car. . . . . . . #chinesefood #chinesetakeaway #lockdownfood #lockdown2020 #chinesefoodie #sweetandsour #springrolls #takeawayfood #stayhome #radissonblu #dohafoodies #lifeonthewedge #qatarfood #qatarfoodbloggers #comfortfood #stayhomestaysafe #amazingcuisine #eatingin #qatarlife

4. Disposable and digital menus

I hate ipad menus but they are now here to stay because they can be sanitized between each use. I know some restaurants are also working on Q Codes for menus, so guests can scan the code and view the menu on their own phone. Some restaurants are also working on offering single-use disposable paper menus for diners. In this vein also expect the demise of crisp white linen napkins – many are looking to use disposable, high quality paper ones.

5. RIP Brunch as we know it…

Sorry guys. This one hurts. Gone are the days of the endless buffets of fresh seafood and sushi and more. A la carte is the the way of the future. It’s cleaner, safer and frankly results in less waste – so that’s the bright side! And many of the big hotels have already pivoted pre-COVID to be more about table service than the buffet.

Shrimply delicious… It’s been nearly a year since I have visited @marriottmarquisdoha #bigapplebrunch and as they say, absence does make the heart grow fonder. I was impressed to see the quality of the food and drink offering had been maintained. It’s an a la carte concept with small plates of some of their favorite menu items plus brunch staples. Standouts for me were this lush seafood plate to share (including a huge crab claw!), a moreish and fall apart tender beef short rib and their creamy cheesecake. In addition to the menu there is a roving cheese cart, ceviche made fresh at your table and roast beef complete with Yorkshire pudding. Drinks include a selection of 25 martinis. At QR595 it’s still a sting in the pocket. But, tables were full of happy paying diners like me so they are doing something right. . . . . . . . . #steakhouse #seafoodplatter #freshseafood #crabclaws #fridaybrunch #brunchparty #kingprawns #foodie_features #foodietravels #marriottbonvoy #marriottmarquis #marriottmarquisdoha #lifeonthewedge #dohafoodies #seafooddiet #seafoodlove #brunchislife #devourpower #tastethisnext #qatarfood #wheretoeat #cravingsatisfied #socialfood #newyorksteakhouse

6. Waiters in masks/shields

When restaurants are open, service staff also need to be protected. So expect masks, gloves and even face shields. Expect some outlets will also install dining pods or shields to enforce social distancing.

7. Reservations required

To maintain social distancing restaurants will be expected to restrict numbers, so it’s call ahead or expect a wait at some of the more popular restaurants and bars.

8. Contactless Dining

Zomato Qatar has already foreshadowed this, but expect many places to not accept cash or even ask for payment in advance. It’s cleaner, safer and quicker. We can expect to see increased spaces between tables, eliminated host stand waiting areas, reductions of bar seats and even entirely new layouts for restaurants to ensure this.

9. Limited menus

This is for two reasons. One is to enable a gradual return that doesn’t stretch resources. Also, in many cases, hotels and restaurants need to reactivate their supply chains – this takes time.

10. No app no dine

Love or hate it, the Ehteraz app is here for a while. Like supermarkets, banks an government buildings, expect restaurants to jump on board and ask to see the app as well.

11. Sanitizer Stations

We may not have sanitizer sommeliers like some restaurants overseas, but expect a ritual hand washing before entering an establishment.

The Wash-up

The good news is that many hotels and restaurants I spoke to do not plan to increase prices. They know that many are hurting post Pandemic and this is already a price sensitive market. It will be also interesting to see how many hotels and bigger restaurants handle valet parking – in some countries they sanitize the steering wheel etc.

But while the restaurants and cafes will be going out of their way to woo us, as diners we have some responsibilities too:

  • Show up: If you book, have the courtesy to turn up. Many restaurants will likely be operating on reduced capacity so seats will be limited. Your punctuality (yes I know Doha dwellers are famously late) is going to be important.
  • Be patient: This is new territory for all of us and restarting take time and effort.Things will take time to bounce back and there will be glitches.
  • Tip: Many service staff have been on unpaid leave and they will appreciate the extra thought.

So who is ready to get back into it? Will you you busting down the doors or waiting and watching? Regardless, cheers to the brave new dining world!

10 Places to Dine in Doha When the COVID-19 Restrictions Are Lifted on 1 July

Let’s be honest. There is only so much banana bread, sourdough starter and dalgona coffee one person can handle in a lifetime.

It has been a long three months but things are finally starting to open up. As part of its four phase plan, to return us to some sense of normality, restaurants will be able to open on 1 July with heavy restrictions.

I’ve spent a lot of time speaking to all of the big players, and some small businesses about their plans. What is clear is that a lot remains up in the air – it’s not as easy as flipping a switch and many new measures need to be in place. Also, several operators, especially those in shopping malls, told me they need new permissions and also need to look at costs such as rent. This quick list includes confirmed openings from 1 July – but I will continually update this and on my Instagram.

You can expect that most of the big five star hotels will have at least one or two outlets open from 1 July. Some are still working out which ones. At the time of pressing the button this post, the W Doha and Mondrian Doha were still deciding which venues to open and there are others in the same boat. Others like Boho Social are waiting for the go-ahead from their landlords. Keep a watch for the fast casual restaurants in the malls as well. My best advice is to call ahead and confirm. I also advise patience — it takes a lot to get back on the horse again after four months in mothballs.

So, time to put away the sweat pants and turn off the Zoom, here we go:

Nobu

DND 1-3 July – I will be busy. The OG of big night out places will be opening its doors come July and I for one couldn’t be happier. I will be the one eating all the tiny salmon tacos. Watch out for their new brunch concept to launch 3 July (details to come).

10 Places to eat at post covid

Elements

The Four Seasons Doha took a hit when it, freshly renovated and re-opened, had to close most of its outlets due to COVID-19 restrictions. Elements opened for takeaway and delivery during Ramadan and after which gave us a taste but it will be one of their first to re-open on 1 July, bringing with it that bit if Four Seasons flair.

Sabai Thai

The very underrated Thai restaurant at the Westin Doha is worth putting on your list if you are craving some SE Asian flavors. Expect well executed royal Thai dishes and don’t leave without ordering the papaya salad.

Le Colonial

The quirky breakfast-only restaurant at Al Wadi Hotel is one to visit. Their all-day breakfast menu of eggs, pancakes and a bit more is well located next to the Souq.

Izu

Also in Msheireb is Izu at the Mandarin Oriental which will also be part of the hotel’s phased re-opening. It’s Mediterranean menu runs the gamut from French to Italian and a few detours.

La Parisienne

The French-inspired boulangerie at Intercontinental Doha The City will open its doors to those wanting a coffee and a pastry. Don’t forget to takeaway their baguettes and croissants for breakfast for that “not quite Paris” breakfast.

La Mar

And breathe…one of the hottest dining out tickets in town is back and the excitement is palpable. While its a tad too hot to enjoy their lovely outdoor terrace, the dining room is big enough for some socially distant Peruvian food.

Mykonos

OK so you can’t actually travel to Greece at the moment but you can pretend! The evergreen favorite Intercontinental Doha at the In that still keeps packing in the crowds hungry for its menu of Greek specials like moussaka, grilled lamb and more, will open as well. Get those plates ready to smash!

Sel Et Miel

The French bistro at The Ritz Carlton that serves up escargot, steak frites and some lovely cheeses is planning to welcome diners on 1 July as is pan-Asian sister restaurant B Lounge.

Crossroads Kitchen

This restaurant at the Marriott Marquis Doha earned a lot of new fans (including me) during the lockdown thanks to its generous and tasty dinner boxes. They are opening up with their international menu on 1 July and should be on your list.

So here are just 10 Places to Dine in Doha When the COVID-19 Restrictions Are Lifted on 1 July. I will keep this list as updated as possible as we launch ourselves headfirst into the brave new world of post COVID. But, please remember, things can change. Also, don’t forget to ensure your Ehteraz app is up to date and you book ahead – seats will be limited now.

Where to Find Specialty and Unique Food Shops in Doha

Need to find that unique ingredient? Or maybe something that reminds you of home or that trip to Italy (when we still could travel!)? There was a time when you had to wait to travel or ask a friend bring in that special vinegar or sauce. Not any more.

In some cases you can thank COVID-19 – some suppliers opened their doors to the public during the lockdown. In other cases, specialty food shops across Doha are popping up all over the city offering a range of items and in many cases, home delivery or through Whatsapp.

Here’s my a few from my little black book of great food and unique produce. Please share in the comments if you have your own!

1. Yellow River Supermarket

This little gem on the main street of Al Aziziya (maybe one too many zzzz there) has fast earned cult status among foodies and home cooks. If you would have told me five years ago I would find authentic Chinese ingredients in the suburban wilds of Al Aziziya, I would have laughed hysterically. It’s small but packed with goodies from China and beyond including 1kg bags of frozen handmade dumplings and the once elusive Chinese black vinegar. It’s cash only but the staff are super friendly. Plug Yellow River Supermarket into WAZE or follow this link.

Must buy: Szechuan pepper, jars of funky Chinese pickles and black vinegar. You can also score the legendary Hong Kong sauces Lee Kum Kee here.

2. The Meat Market

Meat has gone haute couture in Qatar with the emergence of The Meat Market at The Gate Mall. Located on the first floor in Tavola, this is temple of high end meat including wagyu from Australia, slabs of beautiful brisket and more. Meat is taken from the fridges and prepped in front of you. The staff – including trained butchers – will give advice on the best cuts as well as wrap for you or vacuum pack. You can sit in a comfy chair while they take care of everything. Prices are as you would expect for this kind of quality but the experience is unique.

Must buy: some lovely Australian rib-eye for steak night at home.

3. Colosseum Deli

One of the biggest suppliers of all things gourmet in Qatar, the website is a treasure trove of cheese, meat and pasta. their frozen pizzas are made at their factory and the bases are crispy and light and QR14.50 per pack. They also have a brand of premium gelato made here in Qatar. Colosseum have recently branched out to offering bulk spices and grains plus tofu and home cooks will love the selection of flour for pizza and pasta. The best thing? You can order online and they deliver – check their website for details.

Must buy: Their dried pasta as well as any of the cheeses (a little secret – they often stock rare ones like scamorza), the packets of par-cooked rissotto rice with seasonings and bulk bottles of quality olive oil.

4. Torba Store

The ever-popular Torba Market has adapted to COVID-19 and opened their farm shop at Duhail to the public. With a range of locally produced and organic items like raw cow milk, eggs and yoghurt, you can also browse food products from their vendors such as sourdough bread, home made dumplings, kombucha and more. There is a small cafe area plus a garden center out the back offering seedlings and other bigger plants. they hold regular workshops in this space as well.

Must buy: the sour dough bread, kombucha and be sure to check out the ready-made snacks and meals.

5. Vision Mart

Vision Mart has been feeding Qatar’s almost relentless hunger for Korean and Japanese food items for some time now. they stock all kinds of weird and wonderful items including kimchi, Japanese Kit Kat bars, Korean chili paste and more. You can orer online through their website or visit their new location at the DECC Metro station or their flagship shop in Al Sadd. Head to the freezers for bags of frozen gyozas or stock up on their endless varieties of ramen.

Must buy: the cold brew cans festooned with K Pop stars or the Japanese Mochi.

6. Korean Food Center

Remember when I said the appetite for Korean and Japanese food in Qatar was endless? Here is another example. The Korean Food Center in Bin Mahmoud is another place offering Korean and Japanese staples and a few surprises, such as their stock of Korean K Pop band BTS range of Medi Heal masks. Check their Facebook page for regular specials and new products.

Must buy: their blocks of tofu

7. IFG Qatar

Another gourmet food supplier open to the public they have just launched a new website but also sell their products through Talabat as well as through major supermarkets. the website offers free home delivery seven days a week and a range of fresh fruit and veggies including pre-cut packs. their gourmet products include Lavazza coffee and Pomita sugo pasta sauce and dry pasta.

Must buy: The Lavazza coffee capsules for your coffee machine and San Benedetto mineral water.

8. Bluefin Qatar

A wholesaler who offers home delivery of their products, the range is eclectic and interesting. It includes beef, vegan products like the Beyond Meat products, coffee, bakery items and sushi. They also offer a selection through Talabat but you can whatsapp them on +97460044500. Check their Instagram for regular specials and new products.

Must buy: Their Beyond Burger patties and the Eden Vegan Potato buns (QR10.50 for two) as well as their frozen imported seafood selection.Their sushi selection is also fresh.

9. Qatindo-Qatar Indonesia Supermarket

This treasure trove in Old Al Ghanim specializes in ingredients for Indonesian and Malaysian dishes. you will also find all in one place some of those more difficult to get fresh produce like candelnut and jackfruit. Whatsapp them on 5508 3250 and they will deliver to you.

Must buy: the sticky sweet kecap manis sauce.

10. Saffron and Caviar International

I was trawling Matar Qadeem street a few months back (nothing ever moves fast on that street) when I stumbled across this unlikely store. As their name suggests, they sell caviar and saffron as well as honey and truffles. This may actually be heaven. On Matar Street.

Must buy: Well it would be rude not to take home some caviar and saffron!

Your February 2021 Doha Dining Hit List – Best Places to Eat and Drink this Month

$
0
0

February is here and it feels like Winter never really happened? Your February Doha Dining Hit List is here and I feel we all need to make the most of the few cooler days we have left!

And honestly, it feels a little like deja vu as we see our COVID-19 case numbers rising. So with this list comes some words of caution – wear your mask. Practice social distancing. Be sensible!

Here are my recommendations for where to eat and drink in Doha this February:

1. The Cellar

It’s been a long 10 months but The Cellar at the newly rebranded Hyatt Regency Oryx is back open and serving up what they do best – Spanish tapas. Unpretentious, tasty and just a great place to hang out, they are starting slowly with a limited menu of Spanish favorites including paella, a range of tapas and mains. You will see old favorites on the menu including their slow braised beef cheeks (now a smaller, more manageable serving) and new items will be added in the future.

Best for: an after work catchup or a casual weekend dinner. They have a current offer – QR169 for unlimited tapas and wine from 5pm to 7pm daily.

Must order: the crispy cauliflower and the braised beef cheeks.

2. Vine and Dine at Nobu

You have to hand it to the Nobu team, they know how to come up with offers to keep rusted-on fans like me coming back as well as entice new ones. This is a Tuesday night offer that gives you a chance to try three of their signature dishes. Unlike other offers, this isn’t meant for sharing so each diner gets their own sushi platter (featuring a a huge range of their best selling items including tuna belly and a tempura roll), as well as full-sized black cod as well as Nobu cheesecake for dessert plus two glasses of wine (or mocktails) per person for QR350 per head. If you were to order this separately it would be more than QR920 per person – so the value is clear.

Best for: Nobu Newbies

Must order: All of it!

3. Wellington Wednesday at Market Doha

I haven’t been to the W Doha as often as I used to so it was nice to pay a visit to try their Wellington Wednesday. The beef Wellingtons are so beautifully done – two large discs, perfectly pink and super tender and served with baked veggies and a silky gravy. For QR590 for two (including starters, a wellington each and a plate of desserts and two glasses of wine) it’s a perfect midweek treat. The starter platter does need a tweak as it seemed a bit lackluster, but the welling is, as it should be, the star.

Best places tp eat and drink in Doha in February - Wellington Wednesday at W Doha

Best for: Midweek treat

Must order: That Wellington tho…

4. Wine and Cheese At Movenpick Doha

If you have been following me for a while you know I love two things – cheese and a great deal. This offer from Seasons at the Movenpick Doha (the one on the Corniche) combines these two great loves. For QR99 you get a beautifully presented and very generous platter of cold cuts, cheeses (eight different kinds!), accompaniments, a bread basket AND two glasses of wine. ALL OF THIS. You would be hard pressed to find better value or even do it yourself at home for this price. Perfect as a mid-week catch-up with friends or a way to kick off the weekend, it’s offered every night from 5pm.

Best places to eat and drink in Doha in February - Movenpick wine and cheese

Best for: Drinks with friends or just because.

Must order: No need to choose.

5. Breakfast at the Seasons Tea Lounge

The award for “Makeover of the Year” (Made up awards by me) must go to the Four Seasons Tea Lounge which has been transformed into one of the most lovely spots in Doha. Now with a vaulted atrium area and an outside terrace, it’s become one of the most popular spots in the city. Their breakfast menu is tailor made to experience the new look as well as the revamped menu. The breakfast menu runs the usual gamut from eggs of all kinds through to French toast and healthier options. All served with that Four Seasons signature style. On weekends you can plump for a lavish Turkish breakfast. Book ahead, this is a popular spot.

Best for: A lazy weekend breakfast (or cheeky mid-week day off) with friends.

Must order: the eggs benedict and the house made hashbrowns

6. Weekend Brunch at Indochin

Speaking of great deals, the weekend brunch at Indochin at The Doubletree by Hilton Al Sadd falls squarely in this category. Underrated is an understatement. Offered every Friday and Saturday from 12.30pm until 5pm, the set menu takes you on a tour of pan Asian favorites. Each diner gets a small serving of each dish – favorites include a perfectly pitched green curry chicken and a moreish sweet and sour fish. For me the best dish on ground is their chicken and beef satays – straight out of Malaysian street food heaven. At QR149 per person – including unlimited soft drinks and QR245 including unlimited bubbly and house selected special beverages – this is great value. Kids are QR85 (6-12 years old) and under-sixes free. Brunch seatings are 12:30pm -2:30pm & 3:00pm-5:00pm.

Best places to eat and drink in Doha in February - Indochin

Best for: families and Asian food lovers

Must order: Don’t leave without trying the satay

7. New Experience Menu at Idam

With its stunning views, fine dining menu and white gloved service, it’s easy to pigeon hole Idam as a “special occasion” restaurant. But the six course Experience Menu makes for good value as well as a chance to try this very unique restaurant. Chef Leo has created a new menu, melding local flavors and French cooking techniques, that is accomplished yet very approachable. Highlights include a chestnut flour pasta with lobster and a berry jus and a light and fresh local sea bass with burnt limes. The Experience Menu is QR350 for six courses (including mocktails and water) and being Idam, expect lots of little extras such as additional courses, petit fours and more.

Best for: Those who appreciate great food

Must order: The light and airy chocolate souffle

8. Mistura Menu at Toro Toro

I am an unabashed fan of Pan-Latin resto Toro Toro – it has the perfect combination of well executed food, lovely location and a crack service team. Their monthly Mistura menu is offered in addition to their main menu and changes regularly – they can be ordered together or in addition to the main menu. This month’s menu is a mix of seafood and meat dishes and have the same flourishes we have come to expect. A starter of cured salmon with rocket leaves, padano cheese, candied pecans and avocado is dressed with “Peruvian Ranch” sauce and is a real Umami hit. Another starter of small, perfectly formed chunks of slow cooked beef short rib with parsnip is fork tender and silky smooth. Mains include a perfectly spiced rack of lamb chops with Korean spices and a leek puree. This small menu ranges from QR60 to QR175 per dish.

Best for: Those wanting to change up their dining out routine

Must order: I’m not a lamb fan but the chops were a revelation

The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Doha in August 2021

$

We’re almost over the hump of a long and sweaty Summer and this list of best places to eat and drink in Doha in August 2021 will help you get past it.

But the year is speeding onwards and I realized I haven’t done my traditional mid-year report card/check-in. Like 2020, it’s been mixed bag.

New Restaurants Set to Open

Aside from Coya and Saffron we haven’t seen many “big name” new entrants on the dining scene this year, and while disappointing, that’s to be expected given the current situation. There is still buzz about Zuma opening here, it’s more likely we will see some new entrants later this year and closer to 2022 with a slew of new hotels set to open. Some to look out for include BICE at the new Pullman in Westbay (those who have been here a while may remember this restaurant from it’s brief but sweet stint at The Pearl). Another interesting one is the very elegant-looking 12 Chairs at the Mondrian, a caviar bar.

I’m excited to see some variety and new options open up beyond The Pearl/Westbay bubble (see below) as well as places like Paper Moon now offering alcohol and happy hour type offers.

Think Pink?

On Wednesdays we wear pink…and Thursdays, and Fridays and Saturdays….Pink is everywhere…still. I’m hoping that in 2022 designers and owners venture outside this color palate.

More Show Than Go

And this brings me to the QR70 latte. More specifically the QR70 latte at EL&N. While not strictly “coffee based” as they tartly informed me, it does beg the question, how much is too much? Ralphs Coffee Truck, which apparently “represents the timeless American spirit of the Ralph Lauren brand”. changes QR40 for a cappuccino. And yes, some hotels do charge that, but they don’t serve it in a paper cup. It’s time to stop this coffee insanity.

Value Driven

Outside of the coffee debate, I have noticed recently more venues starting to realize that diners are more price sensitive than ever and want better value – whether that be through all inclusive offers or via the discount apps. We’ve also seen the rise of the “drinks packages” – while a few on closer inspection not as generous as they seem, it’s good to see some new options popping up.

Meanwhile favorites like Nobu Doha, the Mandarin Oriental and La Mar continue to demonstrate why they are market leaders – with approachable offers and new menus drawing in a new crowd while also keeping regulars happy.

More Options

On the pocket friendly front, places like Ninja Ramen demonstrate that there is foodie life beyond the “paint by numbers” coffee and burger joints. and Afrasiyab and Nakchivan are among a growing number of Russian/Eastern Euro restaurants and cafes that are giving this city’s dining scene some crunch.

But back to this month – here’s my list of the best places to eat and drink in Doha in August, 2021:

Krossroads Al Wakra

Yes folks there is a bar in Al Wakra and frankly it’s pretty bloody good. While you can expect the usual happy hours (all night during Summer), I can also vouch for the menu of well executed bar food. With items ranging from crunch pakoras through to burgers, pizza and seafood platters, it’s a great addition to the the scene for those living to the South of Doha. Plus staff are charming and well trained and when the cooler months finally dawn, the terrace overlooks the sea.

Must order: Long Island Ice Tea and the piri piri prawns

Saturday Lunch at Mulberry Tavern

The Mulberry Tavern has, for The Pearl crowd, become an instant hit. But beyond the bar set up and garden area, there is also some great food on the menu. Saturday lunch is a very reasonable QR99 for two courses with the option of a QR140 two hour drinks package. The dishes run the gamut of well executed pub food fave fish and chips though to some tender beef brisket. The mains come with roast veggies and Yorkshire puddings.

Must order: the fish and chips was on point (but they do need to have malt vinegar for the real deal)

Riyasat Friday Brunch

This restaurant has been a bit of a revelation for me – the flavors, the execution of the food and the service all immaculate. This brunch is a great way to sample the menu but also get a look at the depth and breadth of Indian cuisine. Picking favorites (and the menu was stuffed with great options), I loved the unique take on street food classic pani puri, using lump crab. The kebab platter elevated a staple of Indian food to a new level – each morsel given the perfect amount of spice and sizzle. The food component is QR255 pet person with an additional drinks package for QR140. Highly recommended.

Must order: everything comes to your table but keep an eye out for the lobster eggs benedict.

Signature Menu at Liang

Liang at the Mandarin Oriental just keeps doing everything right and this weekend menu – available from 12pm to 3pm Fridays and Saturdays – is a great example of that. Giving the people what they want – dumplings – the set menu also value adds with Peking duck and some other signature dishes like their stunningly tender wok fried ribeye. The soup dumplings are among the best I have had outside Asia, the dumpling skin wafer thin and encasing the piping hot soup perfectly. The menu is QR290 per person (minimum of two) and drinks are a la carte (I recommend going traditional with a steaming pot of Chinese tea).

Must order: keep an eye out for the plump shrimp dumplings.

Saturday Supper at La Mar

When a chef says he is cooking their Grandma’s food you just know it’s going to be great. This is the case with La Mar’s new Saturday night supper menu. Eight dishes, which rotate weekly, featuring food inspired by their South American grandmothers. The dishes all bear the hallmarks of what we know and love about La Mar’s take on Peruvian classics – a meld of east meets west with a bit of spice. The dishes are all all generous, comforting and of course, very interesting. For me the star of the show is a wagyu Milanese with a basil infused pesto sauce – so far so Italian – but add in Peruvian chili sauce and you have a new classic. The menu is available every Saturday evening and is a very reasonable QR175 per person and drinks are a la carte.

Must order: The menu changes each week but we are hoping the Peruvian take on s’mores stays.

Bibo Doha

I first visited Bibo before the first lockdown in 2020 and was unable to venture back until recently. More fool me. A pandemic, a lockdown and a bit of time has really benefited this restaurant. On my first visit I found the menu unfocussed and meandering, like it wanted to be all things to all people. The current menu is still long but it’s sharper and the Spanish influences more apparent. A must order is a surprising tomato tartare, presented like its beefy namesake, with tangy accents. A Spanish style cannelloni stuffed with chicken and finished with a creamy sauce is comfort food done right. There are still the gimmicks, like starters served on a giant hand and a flambe station, but it fits with the theatrical aspect of the food. They are doing something right – the night I went every seat was taken. Perfect for a special dinner or just a catch up with friends.

Must order: The tomato tartare, whole lobster with bomba rice.

Where to Eat and Drink in Doha in October

Hello October!

Summer has slipped by and we are now well and truly headed into the business end of 2021. And foodies, let me tell you, there’s a lot to love about the food and drink scene in Doha this month as we head towards the end of the year.

Let’s get right to it:

Ika

This newly opened chef-driven restaurant is giving a bit of a well earned buzz to the dining scene right now. Helmed by the former head chef at Toro Toro, the menu spans the continent of south America from Peru, to Argentina and everywhere in between. Expect fresh, clean flavors, a bit of showmanship (everyone loves some dry ice), and expert cooking. They have a Thursday ladies night with unlimited Sangria and platters of snacks as a well as a Friday brunch. The dining space is best when filled to be honest but the food is worth it. I’ve eaten there twice in a month – it’s that good.

Must order: Tuna tataki, short rib tacos and grilled chicken thighs.

Bayt Sharq

This little gem has been a bolt from the blue for me. Nestled on the shores of the Corniche, the restaurant is housed in an old Qatari family home. Serving up Qatari favorites all delivered family style and meant to be shared, the complex houses small private dining cabanas around a pretty courtyard. There is a small museum, majlis and private rooms as well as a historic store. The experience starts with traditional Qatari dates and coffee – setting the scene for a fabulous meal ahead. The food is filling, flavorful and beautifully presented and they open for breakfast at 8am and serve lunch and dinner through to 11pm. It’s the perfect spot to learn more about Qatari food and hospitality as well as a must-go for visitors. Just go – it’s a real experience. Bookings are recommended.

Must order: seafood machboos and the desserts!

Noodles at Mosaic

The Mandarin Oriental is kicking it out of the culinary park in 2021. To compliment the already diverse main menu in their signature restaurant, Mosaic, they have introduced a short sub meu of classic noodle dishes. With favorites from Korea, China, Japan and Singapore, dishes range from QR50 to QR60 and can be ordered on their own or as an addition to your main menu choices. I love the Singapore style laksa, wit all its coconut creaminess and spicy kick but do check out the Korean noodles. You can order these dishes on their own or in addition to your main menu choices.

Must order: The Singapore Laksa and the Korean sweet potato noodles

Chill Out Brunch at Banana Island

A change is as good as a holiday – and this brunch is like a mini daycation. Hop on board the boat to Banana Island and forget the city for a day – well a Friday. The brunch itself features dishes from across their resort restaurants plus a few surprises along the way (the dessert rooms are stunning). At QR350 for adults including the boat ride, you have the option to leave Doha at 12.30pm or 1pm and return at 4pm or 5pm. There are special rates for kids, this is a family friendly affair with a play area as well. The view is relaxed and the food is spot on. Bookings essential.

Must order: The Shabu shabu station was my first port of call also crispy chicken burger

Your Essential Guide to Eating and Drinking in Doha in November 2021

November is here and if you get up very early the temperature is in the early 20s! Just kidding! We are at the business end of the year in Qatar – when the weather is glorious and the eating and drinking options in Doha plentiful.

Finally dining outdoors doesn’t require a personal AC. And we have some huge events – Arab Cup and the Formula 1 Ooredoo 2021 Grand Prix to name just two. So here is my essential guide to eating and drinking in Doha this November:

Riyasat

I’ve written about this place a few times, but it’s worth a visit or a revisit. Approachable yet beautifully executed Indian food showcasing the many cuisines of this great country. Add in engaged and well trained staff and some lethal cocktails and you have a worthy contender for best on ground in 2021. They offer everything you would expect a Doha restaurant to – a business lunch, a brunch and a happy hour. but it’s their a la carte menu where you will find some gems.

Must order: Paneer khairi with green mango and mustard; tiger prawn malai and mardana murgh (butter chicken but better)

Brunch Around the World at Bibo

Here’s another slow burner for me. I dined at Bibo pre-pandemic and found the food good but the menu unfocussed. A year and a bit later and this brunch is a good taster of their wider menu. Starters and desserts and shared and mains are picked per diner. Speaking of mains, there are some daring additions including an unctuous yet beautifully done squid ink risotto with a perfectly grilled squid tentacle positioned front and center. This is a brunch for foodies – while I suggest you order multiples of the starters (especially the crispy eggplant), it helps to remember the mains are hearty.

Must order: the squid ink risotto and and the famous Bibo oxtail sliders. The dreamy chicken cannelloni is the stuff of my foodie dreams.

Kopi Cup

I discovered tis little gem when getting my ramen hit at Ninja Ramen. A Malaysian style coffee house, the menu includes kaya toast (with coconut jam called kaya) and some cute snacky sandwiches. But ask for their special menu items including a pretty good rendition of Hainan chicken rice. Hainanese chicken rice has become a cult classic (possibly thanks to Anthony Bourdain) and its delicious simplicity. But it’s especially popular in South East Asian countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand – the dish crossed borders along with Chinese migrant workers. Essentially it’s poached chicken with condiments.

The rice is cooked in the chicken broth – giving it a luxe taste. This version is QR45 for a generous half chicken. It makes this foodie happy to see small, pocket friendly places like this pop up in Doha – good food doesn’t have to be served in five star locations (although some influencers may disagree). while I do love fine dining experiences, I will unashamedly champion places like this.

Must order: the iced coffee and Hainan Chicken

Ding N Duck at Elements

I love me some Peking Duck so this offer from the Four Seasons Doha is a slam dunk for me. There are few places in the city that do Peking Duck well – Liang, Hakkasan and Elements – most other places don’t get the skin or the seasoning right. Chinese born Chef Ding knows his duck and this is a great way to indulge – it’s QR340 for a half duck or QR590 for a whole duck, It’s a set menu – starter is a papaya salad made tableside. The main event – the duck, is Chef Ding wheeling a cart over and doing the needful with a large knife.

The crispy skin is sliced off and the meat kept separate. He deftly fills the delicate pancakes with the duck, Hoisin sauce, spring onions and cucumbers. The rest of the duck is whisked away and appears incorporated into your mains – a luscious duck and lychee curry or wok fried with black pepper sauce. If you choose the full duck option you get both. A chocolate duck egg themed dessert is also included and is interactive.

Must order: duck, duck….well you get it

Slice It

While this might not be Doha’s most pocket friendly pizza place (QR70 for a pizza), it does, in my humble foodie view, have the best crust in town. It’s also probably the only joint that uses the heavenly Italian cheese scamorza (it’s smoked and perfect for pizza) – so it gets my vote. Starters are largely OK but the pizzas are the star of the show – the sourdough crust with a lot of puff and a bit of chew are a rare find in Doha. Dine-in their Msheireb store and you can sample pizzas by the slice.

Must order: The Purple Pizza and the burrata pizza.

Upcoming events

So that’s your essential guide to eating and drinking in Doha in November 2021 sorted. And we’ve started “the season” here in Qatar and here are some foodie events to get excited about in November:

The Best Doha Restaurant Dishes of 2021

Did we expect 2021 to be better? Well yes, we did and mostly it has been pretty much same same but with less COVID. But one bright spot in Doha has been the dining scene which shook off the year that didn’t happen to shine brightly. And, as I do every year, I have rounded up my list of the Best Doha Restaurant Dishes of 2021.

There was a lot to like about 2021 as a foodie – a handful of new restaurants, new menus and mostly no Dalgona Coffee. I loved seeing IKA opening its doors and impressing us with its chef-driven South American fare. I was also pleased to see the stunning Salwa Beach Resort hit its stride with some excellent in-house restaurants and innovative approach. And…Coya is finally here, and Bibo Doha finally got the memo and is serving up the food we wanted from them all along.

It was hard to whittle down the list (as it is every year) and yes this is bigger than I anticipated…but here are the best Doha restaurant dishes of 2021. (PS – stick around to the end for some upcoming attractions , trend predictions and other thoughts!)

Lamb Tenderloin at Hakkasan Doha

Welcome back Hakkasan, it’s good to see you firing on all cylinders after a period of serviceable but not earthshattering food. A new menu and a new energy brings it roaring back – special mention for this beautifully glossy and tender tender lamb tenderloin just added to their menu. Very few places do dinner and drinks better than Hakkasan. A worthy addition to the list of Doha’s best restaurant dishes of 2021.

Best restaurant dishes in Doha - Hakkasan Doha

Hainanese Chicken at Kopi Cup

Ticked away inside the Al Mana Hotel on Airport Road is this Malaysian inspired gem. They extended their menu recently beyond sandwiches and coffee to include favorites like their silky Hainanese Chicken Rice. Well price and unpretentious – this place is a little gem.

Lobster Pasta at Izu

This dish, at Izu at the Mandarin Oriental Doha pushes all of my foodie buttons – perfectly cooked lobster and prawns, al dente pasta and a lush but not overwhelming tomato-based sauce. Every strand of pasta coated with just the right amount of sauce. This restaurant has really blossomed since it quietly opened a couple of years ago and this is perhaps my favorite Doha restaurant dish of 2021. Hold me.

Best restaurant dishes in Doha - Izu Doha

Hamour Sambal Matah with Nasi Bakar at Spice Market

Hello W Doha. Nice to see you again. They are slowly getting their mojo back with some cracking new menu items at Spice Market. This is all the things – color, favors, textures.

Wagyu Milanese at La Mar

Still glamorous and still pumping out some incredible food. This dish featured on their Saturday Suppers menu in 2021 and it’s a knock out. It has all the hallmarks of the restaurant’s Peruvian roots with a nod to the country’s Italian influence – notable in the Genovese style pesto.

Xaio Long Bao Dumplings at Liang

This is the ONLY place in Doha that gets this surprisingly complex dumpling right. The dumpling skin is wafer thin yet able to contain the steaming hot soupy filling. Liang takes me right back to the restaurants of Hong Kong. Kudos to the Mandarin Oriental, they are kicking it out of the park when it comes to food and beverage in this town.

Tori Paitan Ramen at Ninja Ramen

a log time coming and this tiny spot in the Al Mana Hotel has been packing in the ramentics since it opened earlier this year. It’s hard to go wrong on the short and compact menu, but for me the star is the Tori Paitan Ramen – chicken white broth. Winner winner!

Calamari “pasta” with quail egg and Caviar at Nobu Doha

OK so this was on a recent special menu but it’s seriously one of the best dishes I have had all year. And this is the beauty of Nobu, keeps surprising you whether you are a regular like me or a first timer. This dish was sublime is so many ways – texture, flavors and presentation – and indicative of their approach to food. The “pasta” is strips of gently cooked calamari…

Best restaurant dishes in Doha 2021 - calamari pasta at Nobu

Piri Piri Prawns at Krossroads Al Wakra

Al Wakra’s first licensed bar serves up some pretty awesome food. And while this is listed on the menu as a side dish, it needs it’s own recognition. Order extra bread to soak up the spicy sauce. Worth the Uber fare

Egg Pastrami with Chili Jam at Crack Cafe

I didn’t pick egg sandwiches as a trend this year but here we are. And what an egg sandwich this is. Best eaten hot, this cafe in Najma serves up a cracker of a sandwich bathed in chili jam and with slightly salty slices of pastrami sandwiched in a brioche roll. Argle…..

Fish Tacos at Boho Social

Ignore the preening instagrammers and make a beeline for this dish – perfectly crispy fried fish fillets with tartare sauce and purple potatoes. It’s English fish and chippy by way of Peru.

Pumpkin Manti at Afrasiyab

Hello loverrrrr. These steaming parcels of sweet and spiced pumpkin have been living rent vfree in my head all year. Hailing from Uzbek eatery Afrasiyab, they are the perfect start to a meal and come with either a yoghurt dipping sauce or a tangy tomato one. Pocket friendly and frankly delicious.

Tandoor Roasted Mushrooms at Riyasat Doha

What a revelation this place is – intensely flavored yet approachable Indian food with flair. I’m pleased to see this place earn a following. this dish is one of their many veggie offerings and is indicative of the menu as a while – well balanced and perfectly presented.

So that’s Doha’s Best Restaurant Dishes of 2021, here’s what I’m looking forward to in 2022:

  • La Bodega Negra – I admire what the St Regis and Al Fardan hospitality has done with the once moribund ballroom complex at Al Gassar. La Bodega Negra is one of the restaurants in this area and for me, it was love at first sight. A recent sampler of their food reminded me – this place is terrific and I need to go back.
  • Speaking of the St Regis, some new energy is on the move there. I can’t wait to see what the refurbishment brings.
  • Sumosan Doha opened recently with a LOT of hype. Hoping this will bring a new edge to Msherieb
  • Three new hotel openings in 2022 – Raffles, Fairmont and Katara Towers are bringing with them some big culinary names and we can’ wait.
  • Cult favorite Zuma is also on the Doha agenda in 2022.

And what about Qatar food trends for 2022?

  • Donuts – I think these will be everywhere in 2022. Easy to make, easier to eat and goes with Qatar’s favorite pastime, coffee.
  • Korea’s global soft power domination continues and in Qatar that means more food, more Squid Game references and more K Pop.
  • Pizza – all kinds of pizza. By the slice, rolled up and more.
  • Plant-based chicken – it’s real and it’s coming here I’m sure of it.
  • Ghost Kitchens – Talabat launched a ghost kitchen at Expo 2020 in Dubai and in Qatar we are also seeing a surge here in Qatar.
  • Robots – yeah robot “waiters” – they are a gimmick and a bit wrong, but in this post COVID-19 world they are gaining popularity. Also they look good on instagram.
  • Wine pairings – FINALLY we are seeing restaurants offer wine pairings to go with their menus. This is something I can fully support.

thanks for following along this year folks – it’s been awesome having you with me for the ride. Here’s to an exciting 2022!

Your March 2022 hit list: Where to eat and drink in Doha

$

The last couple of months has flown by and frankly, I wasn’t prepared. But the Good Ship Life on the Wedge has been righted and all is OK in the world. There is a LOT of love about Doha’s dining scene right now – new openings, new menus and a lot of energy. Stay tuned until the end for upcoming openings and a special offer. So, here it is, your March 2022 hit list: where to eat and drink in Doha this month:

Satsuma

I need to listen to my friends more. When a good friend messaged me about a new place offering unlimited dumplings for QR99 every Thursday, I was skeptical. Derisive even. But folks, its real. Located at the Magnum Hotel and Suites, this new pan-Asian number is in soft opening phase. The wider menu includes Japanese, Thai and Chinese favorites. The Thursday dumpling offer runs from 7pm to 9pm and includes a starter of a maki roll, the dumplings and a choice of mains including a very accomplished mapo tofu as well as soft drinks. The dumplings are made by someone who knows what they are doing – the filling to wrapper ratio is spot on. It’s licensed and beer is a very surprising QR29, wine QR35 and this is why this is a keeper folks.

Must order: the chicken and prawn sui mai

Novecento

I’m all for hotels pushing the boat out with new concepts and this one is a walk-up start winner. The Intercontinental Doha has transformed an outside are into a charming, euro-style terrace with views across their pool area to the beach. The menu is short and sharp, the highlight being their French style tarte flambees (thin and crispy flatbreads topped with all manner of savory goodies). Frankly I just like saying the word flambee. They also offer breakfast, shisha and are licensed and this makes it’s a nice spot for a sundowner.

Must order: any of the tarte flambees. Emphasis on the flambaaaay

Bentley’s Steakhouse

Old is gold and this restaurant at RadissonBlu Doha is everything that is great about old school steakhouses. From the welcome through to the cosy, clubby interior, the white glove but not stuffy service and of course, the excellent steaks. Bentley’s is just, well, fabulous. The menu is one you would expect from a steakhouse – perfectly balanced crab cakes, crunchy fresh from the cooker onion rings, and a selection of steaks to suit any palate. There is also a range of other dishes including a great take on the ubiquitous black cod. I loved the cocktail cart serving up a dirty martini just as I ordered as well as our wine being decanted. It’s the added touches and the exceptional service really that make this a lovely experience.

Must order: the steaks and the crab cakes, just for the cute plate art!

Seafood Saturdays at Jamavar Doha

You can add Jamavar to the list of “wait, why haven’t I been here before?” places. Tucked away inside the Sheraton Grand Doha, this is a branch of a popular restaurant with outposts in London and India. Seafood Saturdays is a perfect introduction to this gem – the concept is like a fish market where you select the type of seafood and the preparation and let them do the rest. I’m, always leary of places who ask you to fill out a form, reminds me of multiple choice exams at school – you know how there are always two answers that are very similar? But here, there is no wrong answer.

Each diner chooses four starters and three mains. This is a LOT but each portion is small and manageable. A dish of Omani lobster with cardamom and saffron is beautifully warming while Canadian scallops with a dash of lime were a surprise hit. Mains included a Turkish seabass with a tangy onion and tomato sauce. at QR235 per person including two mocktails, this is great value. It’s available all day from 12pm.

Must order: tick all the boxes

KKUM

Qatar’s love affair with Korean food is not slowing down. KKUM is the latest addition to the scene and is already garnering firm fans, me included. No Korean BBQ here but they do have hotpot and other spicy offerings. Order one of the steaming bowls of spicy seafood noodle soup (soul food people!) or the perfectly spicy KFC aka Korean Fried Chicken. The hotpot with boiled octopus and veggies is one of the adventurous diners but worth pushing the boat out! Located in one of my favorite foodie streets, Al Kinana street, it’s packed with expat Koreans looking for a taste of home. Prices are pocket friendly and you can dine like a KPop sensation for very little outlay.

Must order: Seriously the menu is packed with great options

Public House at the Marsa Malaz Kempinksi

If ever there was a concept that Doha was crying out for, it’s this. A casual pub-style venue, located on the beach with awesome food. With three distinct seating areas – a backyard, a front yard and a spacious diner style interior. This place has been an instant hit since it opened in February and is only set to get more popular. Good news is that it is kid friendly and with a terrific laid back vibe, it’s easy to see why.

The menu is the brainchild of Justin Yu, formerly of CUT and its packed with comfort food classics like an amped up shareable nachos, a light and bright take on a corn dog and even fresh and fun poke bowls. It ticks all of my boxes and is on my regular haunt list and should be on yours. Happy hour is daily from 12pm to 8pm which is very generous and tempting. In my view the Marsa Malaz never really lived up to its potential on the food and beverage front, glad to see this is changing, fast.

Must order: the salmon poke bowl, corny dogs and the breakfast sandwich.

So folks, that’s your March 2022 hit list: where to eat and drink in Doha this month. Enjoy!

PS you know I love to value add so here are a couple of things to look forward to in coming months:

Ramadan in Doha 2022 – where to find the best food and dining experiences

Ramadan in Doha 2022 – and the age old question, where to find the best food and dining experience?Ramadan is Perhaps my one of my favorite times of year in Doha. Alas COVID has for the past two years put a stopper on this. Boooo! But here we are, back (almost) to normal. Most hotels and restaurants seem to be back to buffets and bigger offerings and there is also a growing number of other favorite restaurants choosing to open their doors in Ramadan.

Here is your Life on the Wedge list of your must visit tents and experiences for Ramadan this year –

Ramadan Under the Stars at Four Seasons Doha

Four Seasons is blessed with its own private beach and thanks to the lovely weather (seriously, anyone remember Ramadan in July?) this place is a little slice of heaven. Expect the usual FS red carpet treatment plus

The Iftar menu is available from 6pm to 8pm while the Suhoor menu is available from 10pm to 1.30am. Both menus are priced at QR 280 per person and reservations can be made through WhatsApp or by calling +974 44948888.

Ramadan under the stars

Mosaic at the Mandarin Oriental

Family friendly and with their usual scene stealing food, the MO’s Ramadan experience is being held in their spacious Mosaic restaurant. Buffet style with a few live cooking stations, check out their freshly made sushi plus the mixed grill. Every night they will have an enchanted forest storytelling area for kids.

Price: QR 240 per person for each Iftar and Suhour, including Ramadan beverages. Complimentary for children under 12 years and storytelling adventures access.

Iftar: Sunset – 8.30pm and Suhour: 9pm to 2am

Ramadan at Nobu

Life is a little better when Nobu opens for Ramadan.

Offered Monday through Saturday, from 6pm to 11pm. QAR 275 per person for a four-course set menu.

Hakkasan Doha Ramadan

Finally! Hakkasan is open for Ramadan and this foodie is doing laps of the Corniche to celebrate. Their iftar menu is offered in addition to their usual a la carte menu. And it’s a cracker – their famed dim sum in addition to salt and pepper squid are standouts but the smoked wagyu beef rib is….heaven.

Iftar is QR 298 per person; inclusive of juice.

375 Chicken N Fries

I just discovered this place and while the market is crowded, it’s head and shoulders above the rest. The chicken is fresh and importantly cooked to order. So it’s piping hot, crispy and packed with flavor. they have a range of offers this Ramadan and have three locations in Al Hilal, Lusail (love this location next to the water) and in Aspire.

Open from sunset daily – try the combo meals and the sandwiches.

Westin Doha

If you want a break from traditional Ramadan fare, the always excellent Sabai Thai is open from Sunset. For something more traditional, their under the stars experience is happening at the Luxe Terrace (seriously lovely with cabanas and shisha) from Sunset to 1am. Their Arabian Souq concept is QR230 for Iftar and Suhoor is QR250.

Riyasat

Easily one of my current favorite spots, Riyasat’s Indian menu has charmed a legion of fans. Their iftar set menu is like their greatest hits and a great chance to try something new.

Iftar from sunset for QR195 per person.

Riyasat - Your essential guide to the best places to eat and drink in Doha in November 2021

Maya Doha

Another for those wanting a break from the usual Ramadan routine. Taco Tuesday remains in place (yassss) and their Ramadan Merienda menu with a selection of favorites and their famous guacamole is QR135 per person.

Lobito De Mar

More to come on this Dani Garcia spot – the perfect combo of great food and service. They will be open from 7pm for their a la carte menu and I recommend you give it a try for the paella alone. Seriously great food in a romantic spot by the water. As I said full review to come but here is a snapshot.

Levantine at Salwa Beach Resort

Definitely worth the drive, Levantine serves up food from Syria, Lebanon and the region. With a 1001-night style outdoor terrace with shisha and a set menu, it’s perfect. You can also opt for an iftar buffet in their Souk Kitchen restaurant.

Iftar buffet at Souk Kitchen is QR225 and Iftar at Levantine is a set menu for QR250

Suhoor at Levantine is an incredible QR98 per person

Sushi On

Another non-traditional spot for Ramadan and well worth checking out. My experience with this place is that it has some of the freshest and most fun sushi in town. iftar is QR199 and available daily from sunset to 8pm. TakeAway only (no dine in).

Alwadi Hotel MGallery

Get the royal treatment at the AlWadi this Ramadan. I love the food at this hotel and really it does sit under the foodie radar. Aside from their dramatic iftar, they are also offering suhoor served poolside – this really is a unique spot in Msheireb.

Iftar is QR220 (per person). Daily sunset to 8pm

Suhoor from 9pm is QR190 for a set menu

There are plenty of places offering iftar in Doha this Ramadan that won’t break the bank. And yes, I admit dear foodies, a few are even may actually be in hotels…

From traditional iftars through to something a little more out of the box, you can find an offering for every budget this year. To make it even more cost effective, check out both The Entertainer and MyBook for two for one deals and you can often find Ramadan offers on QGrabs (this is not ad for any of them, just a friendly reminder they can offer great value).

These are the top places to enjoy some tasty iftars and still have change for suhoor!

Five star fun at Seasons Restaurant at Movenpick Doha

This is my pick of the pocket-friendly five star hotel iftars and the hotel consistently delivers great food without the drama. For just Qr99 per person you get the full Movenpick iftar buffet experience with all the Ramadan favorites like shwarma and roast lamb and a few surprises like freshly made sushi and more. Suhoor is QR75 per person.

Asian flavors at Mama Rozie

My forever foodie crush are offering family iftar sets (for four people – order one day ahead) for a brilliant QR180. Their daily Ramadan specials include their legendary fried kaoy teow noodles for QR30. They open daily from 2pm for takeaway and from iftar for dine in. Whatsapp 70456262 for more menus.

Mama Rozie never disappoints

Cafe classics Meesh Cafe

Six years down the track and this OG cafe still keeps the patrons fed and watered for very reasonable prices. Their iftar box is designed for two to three hungry folks and includes soup, sandwiches (among the best in town in my sandwich loving opinion – the chicken banh mi is great) and warm and cold drinks. You do need to give 24 hours notice for the boxes but the cafe is open from sunset.

Fast and fresh IKEA Qatar

Say what you want about our Swedish mates at IKEA, they know how to feed a crowd in a flat pack sized, cost effective manner. And I do appreciate their event-based and seasonal menus. Ramadan is no exception. Their iftar menu includes roasted chicken with oriental rice soup and salad for QR35 as well as Dawood Basha (Arabic meatball stew) with soup and salad also for QR35.

Family friendly Chilis Qatar

Another dependable and family friendly option is Chilis. I admit to being a fan of their Tex Mex options (the crispy veggie fajitas are on regular rotation in my household). This Ramadan they offer a main and salad for QR58 or QR78 delivery or dine-in after sunset. Family friendly and as mentioned, always does what it says on the tin.

Take a trip to the Med at &deli

This terrific cafe/deli in City Centre Doha is winning fans like me who keep going back for their fresh and thoughtfully prepared takes on classic Turkish and Greek dishes. While it may be located within shouting distance of a certain hypermarket, the interiors are spacious and calm. Their iftar menu is three courses with starters including stuffed vine leaves, mezze and a soup of the day. Mains include a choice of entrecote of beef and veggies on skewers or corn fed chicken marinated with honey mustard. And yes, there’s baklava for dessert. This is available for QR90 for one or QR160 for two people.

Beautiful interiors at &deli

Azeri style at Nakchivan

Heading to the Souq to enjoy the extended cooler start to 2022? Sample some Azeri food at this gem of a spot. Their dine-in set iftar menu is QR130 per person and includes salads, soup (including Dovga, one of the most famous dishes from Azerbaijani cuisine, a soup traditionally made from plain yoghurt and herbs) and an iftar plate of white cheese, dates and veggies. We then head in the Caucasus with your choice of a main including their tender beef kebab or dosheme or ovruste pilaf studded with nuts and fruit Desserts include Azeri paklava (baklava) and drinks are also on the menu. Take my advice and head upstairs for a birds eye view of the rolling Souq action. what I especially love about this place is the service – engaged and helpful.

Keeping it real at Nandos Qatar

Speaking of chicken, I do love myself a cheeky Nandos and the beauty of this place is that it’s just as good for delivery as it is dining in. Consistently fresh and well presented, their iftar offering this Ramadan is like a greatest hits from their menu – an espetada (you know, the one on the skewer), plus a half chicken, hoummous, pita bread plus sauces for QR120. Yeah, I am a fan-do of Nandos but they do put a smile on your face.

An Indian Affair at Dalchini

I ate here a few months back and found the food approachable yet inventive, generous and very well executed. I don’t know why this place isn’t more popular. Their iftar offering is available from sunset until midnight an includes an arrival drink, a selection of Indian salads and snacks for the table to start. Also on the menu is mini tacos including a very alluring sounding duck Chettinnadu version and one promising a jackfruit marsala. There are also tandoor style grills, gravy-based mains including a crowd pleasing butter chicken as well as breads and rice. All for a very reasonable QR159 per person.

So dear foodies, stand by for another Ramadan-related post in coming days including where to find a tasty iftar for under QR50. In the meantime you can find all the latest foodie news and reviews:

Iftars for under QR50 in Qatar? Yes Doha foodies, it can be done!

A delicious iftar under QR50 in Qatar? Yes my foodie friends it can be done. Like many who have contacted me, I’ve been surprised at the general prices for iftar this Ramadan. This is a combination of sticker shock from the two year COVID-19 hiatus and a general indication of the rising prices globally. Knowing so many people are seeking value for money, I thought a look at what iftars can be bought for QR50 was worth exploring.

These are some great options to suit all kinds of cravings – not always traditional – I found while doing the rounds in the last few days and from places I know and trust. You can order these for eat in, pick up or delivery – just check the links mentioned.

Tandoor

Always dependable and always arrives hot and tasty. Their iftar meal boxes include a starter, main dish, fruit and sides from QR15 and QR25 for premium iftar box with extra sides, a curry gravy and bread. We love their chicken biryani.

375 Chicken and Fries

OK yes, so I may be a little obsessed with this place that hails from NYC. Especially the Lusail food park location that is by the promenade (they have their own seating area facing the water) and a perfect spot for a stroll and some dinner. Their Ramadan specials include a terrific combo meal with a choice of their chicken sandwiches with fries and a drink for QR45. They also have a range of milkshakes and special drinks like a very tart lemon/mint to cool you down.

Servings are generous and everything is freshly cooked to order. I suggest the honey garlic sandwich for a sweet/savory kick also their chicken tender boxes with honey mustard sauce. Fries are of the skinny persuasion with a light dusting of salt. Open from 4.30pm (sunset for dine in), they also have kids meals from QR28.

Located in the Qatar Petrol Station in Duhail, their iftar box is a doozy. Three dips, snacks, salads, rice, mixed grill, fruit and sweets for a very reasonable QR48.

Chaya Kada

A friend took me to the Matar Street branch of this Indian eatery a few months ago (one of three branches) and I loved the simple Keralan dishes, packed with flavor. They are also well known for the chai! Their iftar kits include biryani, fruit and snacks, appam and a chicken curry for just QR25.

Spice and Sizzle

Fun fact – I visited Pakistan a few years ago and it’s one of the most interesting countries I have been to. Pakistani food is also sublime and very underrated. Spice and Sizzle is a favorite and this Ramadan they have a few platter options priced under QR50. Platter one has mutton shami burger, chicken mandi, samosa and pakora and channa chaat (chickpeas FTW!) plus accompaniments for QR40. The next one up is a very reasonable QR45 and includes mutton reshmi kebab and chicken tikka. I always find the food here great quality – definitely one for your list.

Ninja Ramen

Not your traditional meal for iftar, but Ninja Ramen’s steaming, soothing bowls of noodle soup are the perfect way to break the fast. Forget the other pretenders folks, this place is the real deal. Open from 6pm to 2am throughout the Holy Month (closed on Mondays),they have also introduced some new toppings for their ramen including nori seaweed and bamboo shoots. the menu has also seen the addition of Miso Ramen for our veggie friends and fellow travelers. Ramen are priced between QR35 and QR38 with two free toppings. My regular pick is the Tori Paitan with char sui chicken and fried garlic – with a drink I still have change of QR50. Bookings are essential and there is no delivery.

The French Olive

This one was a surprise – they have a range of iftar menus and one is a very reasonable QR48. This includes leek and potato soup, salad, hoummous, a chicken mandi (chicken and rice) and dates, yoghurt and water.

Doha Roastery

Again not a traditional iftar restaurant, but I think the Venezuelan arepas (a delicious cheesy bread made out of cornmeal and stuffed with fabulous things like cheese, meat and chicken) and other snacks are the perfect post fast meal. The small cafe and store is on Salwa Road (they also have a location in Q Mall and Rawdat Al Hamam) and is unassuming from the outside, but once you taste the arepas, empanadas and taquenos, you may wonder where they have been all of your life. Arepas start from QR30 and up and empanadas Q25. Wash down their their famed coffee.

And so, that’s the answer to the question – a delicious iftar under QR50 in Qatar? Yes my foodie friends it can be done. There were some hotels offering great deals through services like Q Grabs – but do check the conditions and the available dates – Entertainer and MyBook and check my post here for some other options.

The Best Doha Breakfast Spots Open During Ramadan

$

Perhaps the most asked question I have been getting this week is – what breakfast spots are open in Doha during Ramadan? The good news is that there is a great range of options to suit all kinds of morning cravings.

For my recommendations on where to eat after sunset, check my recent blog post here. But for those on the hunt, here’s my list of the best Doha breakfast spots open during Ramadan:

Public House

Instantly iconic when it opened a couple of months back, Public House at the Marsa Malaz is open for breakfast. Try the brie and jam tartine for a sweet/savory hit or the sublime bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. Opens 7am and closes 3pm and bookings recommended especially on weekends when this family friendly place is jammed.

Westin Doha

The hotel’s Seasonal Tastes is open throughout the Holy Month for breakfast and lunch from 6.30am. Try the fantastic egg dishes and of course the fresh buffet. Great for those living on the other side of town. Westin’s food offerings are underrated in my view.

Quick Bites

This West Bay stalwart never disappoints and as usual is open during Ramadan from 6am. On weekends I recommend booking ahead as it can fill up quickly. Their (multiple) takes on eggs benny are highly recommended as is the coffee (the bigger the cup the closer to….well you know). They also do an all-day breakfast with the “works” for those needed some extra sustenance.

Le Colonial

This breakfast spot at the Alwadi Hotel MGallery is my erstwhile morning haunt year round and during Ramadan it’s serving breakfast from 7am to 12pm. Order their beautifully constructed and umami laden savory crepes or their Le Parisienne set breakfast which comes with a fresh bakery basket, a cheese plate and the usual eggs. Special mention to their hash browns which are definitely not frozen. Service is friendly and fast. Heaven. Bookings highly recommended.

Doha dining scene's mid year report card

Ika

This gem at the Aleph Doha has set the foodie scene ablaze, and the spot is opening for breakfast in Ramadan. It’s a buffet so not the usual fare but expect some South American touches on the dishes available. It’s also price at a very reasonable QR95 per person and open from 6.30am to 10.30am (11am on weekends).

Lobito De Mar: First Look at Doha’s new Spanish Seafood restaurant

I have a confession to make – I’m a huge fan of Dani Garcia, the brains behind the newly minted Lobito De Mar at the Marsa Malaz Kempinski.

But when I was told this new Doha venture was to be located on the moribund bayside site that was home to the now dearly departed Pearl Social and prior to that Antica Pesa, I did hesitate. The spot, on the island outside of the main hotel, well, it seemed a gamble. The underrated Pearl Social was excellent couldn’t make a dent and NY style Antica Pesa too was long gone. Both spots had a celebrity name attached as well.

But with the space given a light and bright seaside inspired makeover and a menu of Spanish seafood classics, I think the hoodoo might finally be broken.

What to expect at Lobito De Mar

Tapas and seafood. It’s that simple. Lobito de Mar first opened in Marbella in 2017 followed a second branch opened in Madrid in 2019. It’s the second Doha venture for Garcia after the greatly improved Bibo. Fans of Bibo (I am a recent one), will see a few familiar dishes.

The main dining room occupies the downstairs and has an outdoor terrace. The night I visited it was blowing a Doha desert inspired gale, so we luxuriated on the comfortable seats inside. In a very Doha twist the dock in front of Lobito will allow guests to arrive with their private boats and The Pearl water taxi service. the dining room is close enough to be cosy but not so close it’s an issue – the night I visited the restaurant was full. The vibe was lively and honestly it was a treat to see a busy restaurant post-COVID.

Upstairs is a bar area and will host a DJ in coming months.

The Menu at Lobito De Mar

I was fortunate to try a sampling of the menu on my visit, matched with wines. Highlights included:

  • The Spanish can do things with potatoes that other nationalities only dream about. Patata alinada – crushed potatoes with olive oil and a silky tuna tartare – fresh, clean and tangy
  • Croquetas de calamar – these inky morsels, are in turn salty and unctuous
  • Spanish prawn salad comes with a tangy dressing and stuffed inside a hollowed out pineapple. As an Australian it’s my duty to ensure pineapple is added to everything (pizza, burgers etc) do I was pleased to see this playful dish on the menu.
  • Another for the octopus lovers (please, no need to tell me to watch The Octopus Teacher ok?), pulpa la Gallega, hailing from the Spanish region of Galicia on the Atlantic coast, perfectly tender discs of the mollusc, dusted with paprika and salt. To me this kind of dish exemplifies the beauty of Spanish cuisine – simple yet at equal turns complex.
  • The main event – huge steaming pans of paella, the glistening, al dente rice and the crackle of the socarrat (the crusty and crunchy on the base of the paella) like music to this foodie’s ears. This is not the paella we usually see here, aka mounds of overcooked rice. This is the real deal. Seafood paella comes studded with prawns, mussels and lobster. A wagyu version sees the broth the rice is cooked in in a beefy broth, the meat seasoned hard, served a silky medium rare.
  • Dessert featured a tarte de queso – yes a Basque style cheesecake but not as we know it. More savory than sweet, the wobbly custard like cake was finished with a generous shaving of manchego cheese. Heaven for this cheese lover.

Wines and cocktails at Lobito De Mar

The night we visited they offered is selection of sherry and gin based cocktails as well as a Spanish wine-based tasting menu. I’m always pleased to se this attention to detail.

What about the prices?

To be clear, this was an invite and a set menu. But they have now released their full menu and prices. It’s a five star hotel venue so the prices do reflect that.

Starters sit at QR50 and up, croquettes QR60 and up, sides from QR25 and their fish dishes from QR55. Paella (for two) is from QR235, creamy lobster rice QR435.

The Verdict on Lobito De Mar

This is meant as a first look at Lobito De Mar At Marsa Marsa Malaz Kempinksi. This visit was a pre-opening experience and for perhaps the first time serving a crowd of this size, service and atmosphere were spot on. The menu is populated by Spanish classics which do, in my experience stick as close as possible to the culinary heritage and DNA of the food. The paella is also hands down the best in class in this city.

As someone who has been covering the food scene in this city for more than 10 years (yep, this blog hits a decade this year), I have long been saying that Doha is ready for and indeed needs sophisticated, interesting places like this with legitimate culinary pedigree.

Third time is a charm as the experts say.

Details:

Lobito De Mar, Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl

Open from 6pm at the moment

Good for: Seafood lovers, romantic dinner, night out with foodie friends

Must order: the octopus dishes and of course the paella!

First week of Ramadan is almost done and dusted! How are you fairing? Are you fasting? For those looking for things to do food-wise this weekend I thought I would do a quick wrap-up of options – a Ramadan weekend dining guide of sorts!

As always, call ahead to check timings and availability!

If you want to stay home but dine well: Four Seasons Doha to Go Box

For those anting to keep it close to home this weekend, the Four Seasons has two options in their to-go box this Ramadan. The international box (they sent me to try this week) includes options such as a veggie lasagna (back by popular demand), seafood chowder and a very tasty shrimp and quinoa salad. The oriental set menu incudes the choice of lamb machboos or a mixed grill for mains plus hold and cold mezze. It’s QR360 per set menu and easily feeds two hungry souls. Order ahead and pick up from he hotel’s entrance.

If you want a chilled family friendly vibe: Mosaic at Mandarin Oriental

I had a little preview of this pre-Ramadan but had a chance to experience on invite it in full this week. Rather than go all out with a tent, they have adapted their all day dining restaurant Mosaic. The assisted buffet includes a raw seafood station (crab legs!), sushi and sashimi made fresh as well as a dumping station, noodle soup and of course, grills. For a sweet treat try their house-made gelato (the Arabic coffee version is the OG). Don’t forget the have a kids area with story telling. It is QR 240 per person for each Iftar and Suhour, including Ramadan beverages. Complimentary for children under 12 years and storytelling adventures access. Iftar: Sunset – 8.30pm and Suhour: 9pm to 2am.

If you want to catch a sunset: Jiwan

For a luxe touch and a fresh look at Qatari cuisine, Jiwan at the National Museum of Qatar has a set menu if QR250, available for the whole table including two mocktails and a hot drink. The menu incudes heir famous harees, wild red snapper with curry and cauliflower and lamb with labne. I have eaten here several times – the flavors are fresh and very unique. The white glove service also a standout and of course, those views of the skyline. Open from sunset.

If you want to do weekend breakfast with friends: The Cellar

A long-time favorite spot of mine at the Hyatt Oryx, throughout Ramadan it is open for breakfast from 630am to 10am with the usual lavish buffet as well as hot dishes. a great spot for a family breaky this weekend. You can find some other options in my recent post. It’s QR120 for adults, QR60 for kids and this includes soft drinks.

If you want great food yet cheap and cheerful: Kopi Cup

I write about the little gem late last year and they have a Ramadan menu with some real Asian comfort food. Congee (rice porridge) for QR10, shakshuka for QR25. I recommedn the juicy chicken satay and the soothing Hainan chicken rice made in-house. Available for delivery on Talabat and Snoonu from 5pm as well as dine in from sunset.

So that’s your Ramadan Weekend Doha Dining Guide 7 to 10 April, 2022. Just a reminder:

Three Ramadan at Home Options from Doha Hotels

$

0

Sometimes you just want to stay in and these three Ramadan at home options from Doha hotels are perfect for that. Traditional, asian and international – all are generous and offer something to please everyone in the family or group:

Nobu to Go

If you need a break from the traditional Ramadan options and want to to treat your bad self, this is perfect. Order ahead through the Four Seasons Doha online store, you pick up at your designated time from Nobu’s island home. It’s a set Ramadan menu offering some of their most popular dishes – the teeny tiny seafood tacos, the glossy black miso cod, the wagyu cooked how you want it (I recommend medium rare as it travels better) and their cult classic banana crumble with dates.

This is in addition to their sushi and sashmi and I was so happy to see their Nobu Caesar salad with its candied pecans on the menu. Pictured was for two people (a gift of the hotel) and we had leftovers for the next day. The menu is QR275 per person and they also offer many of their a la carte dishes and bento to go.

Mandarin Oriental at Home

For a family feast, the Mandarin Oriental offers their Ramadan Set Menu boxes for four (pictured) or six people. And again, you will have more than enough for multiple meals. The box includes, soups, starters and salads plus mains, and the highlight for me was a beautifully cooked baked seabass with harra sauce – roasted tomatoes and red peppers.

This was a stunning dish, that travelled well and paired perfectly with their saffron rice side dish. We also inhaled the Mahashi – vegetables stuffed with a herbaceous rice and meat mixture and baked in a tangy tomato sauce. Desserts are always a highlight at a MO Doha and the inclusion of their popular honey cake in the box was a crowd pleasing touch.

You order online 24 hours ahead through their store and pick up from the hotel the following day from 2pm. The box is QR800 for four people (the one we were gifted by the hotel) and QR950 for six.

A special note, the hotel’s Cake Shop has just launched some new pastries including a moreish tomato and oregano pastry with feta cheese, which had it not been Ramadan, would have been devoured in the car on the way home.

Four Seasons Doha Ramadan to Go

The Four Seasons is offering both an Oriental and International iftar box this year. We were sent the international version to try and it’s stacked with some dishes that will keep even the most fussy eaters happy. Starters include a shrimp and quinoa salad, an earthy mushroom soup and crispy fried shrimp. The highlight of the mains (you select two) for me was their pitch perfect veggie lasagne and some beautifully seasoned lamb chops.

I’m always going to choose their NY style cheesecake for dessert and this one hit the spot. Pick up is from the hotel’s driveway which is probably the most luxurious drive through joint in Doha. At QR360 the box easily feeds two hungry people with leftovers. You can also order their afternoon tea box and beef wellington online as well as whole cakes and their pastries.

As we enter the final two weeks of Ramadan, I will continue to bring you the most noteworthy and tasty options.

Coming up this week:

  • Hotpot for Ramadan? I found the best in town and it’s cheap as 🍟 – coming this week!
  • If you need some more inspo check out this post.

Hot for Hot Pot? This Doha Hotel Has Three Great Options for Iftar

$

0

Who doesn’t love hotpot? In my view it’s the ultimate do-it-yourself meal – steaming pots of seasoned broth, platters of meat, veggies and seafood plus noodles and more.

D’Chopstix at Holiday Villa has a terrific offer for those who want to try hotpot this Ramadan. The hotyel is offering it among a trio of options for iftar or a dinner. You can choose from the hotpot; or a Korean style BBQ done at your table or shabu shabu (Japanese style hotpot) for QR160 for two people. All DIY and all delicious.

The “traditional” hotpot option has dual broths – a clear chicken soup and a tangy, spicy Tom Yum style broth with lemongrass. The platter of goodies is very generous, with prawns, mussels, tofu, chicken, beef veggies as well as rice and egg noodles. The broth is topped up as you need it by the cheerful and engaged staff.

If you had a group of four or more you could do the hotpot and one of the other options (the Korean BBQ would be perfect for this) family style.

For those not in the know, Holiday Villa is a Malaysian chain and the Doha outpost has some excellent food from that part of the world. We ordered an additional plate (maybe two) of chicken and beef satays, which were cooked fresh, the peanut sauce, laden with flavor.

Chef had also heard we were Malaysian food fans and brought out some of his murtabek to try. This is a stuffed pancake/flatbread sold by street food vendors found not just in Malaysia but also the Arabian peninsula and other parts of Asia.

All up, including tea, soft drinks and the extra satays, the bill came in at less than QR240 for two people (yes, we paid for ourselves). For a spur of the moment Thursday dinner, is great. The hotpot/shabu/BBQ is available every day from 6pm.

Holiday Villa have a new chef and seem to have hit their stride again after COVID-19 and I am here for it. This has always been an underrated option in a crowded market. Their weekend Malaysian breakfast at casual outlet Kafe Ole is also back. Dishes include Nasi Lemak – a terrific, pocket friendly option for an adventurous eater!

The Details

We’re two weeks deep in Ramadan and I hope you are enjoying it as much as I am. For other posts and dining options for all budgets:

Your Doha Ramadan Weekend Food Guide for 21 to 23 April 2022

We’re in the home stretch and Eid is almost in sight! Here’s a wrap of my tried, tested and found to be delicious recommendations – your Doha Ramadan Weekend food guide for 21 to 23 April, 2022.

As always, call ahead to check timings and availability.

Going Greek at Papa Gyros

The little brother of Katara-based Greek restaurant Hellas, Papa Gyros is turning out delicious gyros (from QR18-20) in fluffy Greek-style pita packed with garlicky goodness. Open daily from 5pm, they also offer beef and lamb souvlaki plates with all the fixings and freshly cooked fries dusted in feta cheese for QR14. My tip is order extra garlic mayo. Located at Katara Beach No.5, they are currently open from 5pm and are on the delivery apps.

Old School Ramadan Tent at Dusit Doha

The Dusit was a surprise packet for me this Ramadan. They have gone for the more traditional ballroom-style tent for their first outing, but the range and freshness on offer will tame even the most fussy eaters. I loved the creative sushi, the BBQ meats and I even hit the pasta station.

Usually the salad station is a bit of an afterthought, but here it had meats, cheeses and some fantastic salads. The grill and other hot dishes are set up on set up on their terrace (you can also dine here). At QR220 per head, the selection and quality make this worth a visit (I was invited). FYI their excellent Thai restaurant, Benjarong, is open for dinner in Ramadan.

Coffee and more at Flat White Hilal Branch

Perhaps the OG of specialty coffee in Qatar, Flat White have ventured south in the city and opened a new branch in Al Hilal. Their sixth spot in Doha, the new location is on Rawdat Al Khail street, is spacious and offers the same excellent coffee and unique food menu (their savory brunch menu is *chefs kiss*). They don’t know this yet but I’m moving in after Ramadan.

Splurge on Royal Indian Cuisine at Riyasat Doha

A seriously impressive Indian restaurant at Al Gassar Resort (St Regis), their Ramadan menu features some of their most popular dishes and is QR195 per person (the to-go option is QR195 for two persons). They offer both veg and non-beg menus.

While I haven’t had a chance to get there his Holy Month, I have tried many of the dishes on the menu (both as a guest of the restaurant and as a paying diner) including the richly spiced mardana murgh which is a tandoor style chicken bathed in a saffron cream sauce; the craveable samosa chaat and the tandoori prawns with Kashmiri chilis. This place is easily one of my top top five restaurants in Doha right now.

So there it is – your Doha Ramadan food guide for this weekend – for other posts and dining options for all budgets:
