Is the New York Steakhouse Brunch the Best in Doha Right Now?

$

Forget your gimmicks, your themed events and fancy dress.  For me – good Friday brunch experience has a number of key elements – good food, great service and yes, crowd-pleasing music. And there are many around town – Nobu, Market at the W Doha, Shangtastic at Shangri-La who get it spot-on. But last year, a new and surprising entrant shook up the brunch scene – the Big Apple Brunch New York Steakhouse at Marriott Marquis.

Besides my sporadic trips to Quick Bites and Ipanema, frankly I never rated this hotel for its food and beverage. For me, it was a little too cookie cutter – big hotel, no real personality. So when I accepted an invite to try their new brunch at their steakhouse last year, I was expecting the usual – nothing too challenging and exciting. Decent steaks. Some salads. A couple of “surprise” dishes. A cocktail or two.

Let’s just say, I admit now that I underestimated this brunch.

All about that steak

What’s so good about it?

  1. The concept

At QR500 this is steep by anyone’s standards, but the idea of a US style brunch, no buffets and food cooked to order is more than appealing. Don’t get me wrong, there is a time and a place for a brunch buffet, but my days of scheppling back and forth and waiting, plate clutched to my breast, for that single prawn to be cooked at the live station, yep those days are gone. The concept is simple – a tight menu of favorites (and cheese and a roast cart), proper French bubbles (you heard me!), 25 martinis and live entertainment.

2. The food

Nothing tricky. Rather international brunch favorites, served in small portions, just enough for one and also perfect to order a few to try (or all!). But these dishes all have one thing in common – a luxurious and creative touch.

I was happy to see of my recent visit, aware they had regulars, they changed up the menu to keep us interested, adding new dishes and keeping old favorites. They seem confident enough in the food and concept to make some tweaks, something diners appreciate. But the food? Well. An Eggs Benedict rendered luxe by the addition of a crab cake.

caesar salad
Hail Caesar

Chicken and waffles – the chicken served two ways (pan fried and deep fried), the waffle giving a hit of sweetness. A slow cooked braised short rub, fork tender, served with a perfectly poached egg and a silky hollandaise. A Caesar salad, a far cry from the cafe renditions, with a breaded, soft yolked egg.

As expected there is a burger, served open faced with a good hit of cheese and just enough to stave off the effects of the martinis. A filet of steak is perfectly cooked and kicked up a notch with a piece of pan fried foie gras.

A favorite dish, tuna tartare, given a cheeky twist thanks to gin and tonic jelly and a creamy avocado sauce.

Showstopping seafood

One of the stars of the menu is the show-stopping seafood platter. Perfectly poached lobster, king crab legs and prawns plus a healthy dose of briny oysters. This, a glass pr two of their French bubbles, well I would be happy. there are also desserts (not my thing), but the chocolate souffle looks spectacular!

3. The drinks

I recognize that not everyone drinks or even likes a drink with lunch, but for those who do, this is a great brunch. I’ve always thought it was a little rude for some brunches to charge upwards of QR450 and serve very cheap wine and sparkling. Yeah, First World Problem, but this place proves you can serve quality tipples and not compromise. Another example of this is their Martini Cart – serving 25 different martinis, using premium gins (the espresso martini is a thing of beauty).

4. The atmosphere and service

This is a smaller space than most brunches in Doha. It’s a steakhouse, so the feel is clubby – red leather, high backed chairs, an open kitchen. But add in an excellent singer (and some retro party tunes between sets) and you have all the atmosphere you need. Couple this with outstanding, personalized service (they have regulars for a reason), where no glass is left empty for long and dishes cleared and new ones appear quickly.

Crepe Expectations

Why do I think this is currently the best brunch in town right now?

It’s a big call.

You might say I, like other bloggers, had been invited and this colors my judgement. Yes, it’s true, I did last year and was impressed then. But I have been a paying guest four more times. That’s a blogger actually putting their money where their mouth is. I am as impressed now as I was then.

I had been worried the quality was a once off – but my return visits proved me wrong. The food is consistently great as is the service. I was also concerned, like many concepts in Doha, it would start with a bang, then they would start to strip back to save costs. Not so here – that touch of luxury and attention to detail remains.

I had given up my Friday brunching ways a while back – lunches at home and events with friends over bubbles and oysters. This is the concept that got me out of my Friday brunch retirement.

Your March Hit List – Where You Should be Eating and Drinking in Doha this Month

March is here and thank God. Wasn’t February the longest short month ever? But March, it holds so much promise. Winter is over, we are well and truly in the midst of the actual year. And restaurants in Doha are finally hitting their straps – serving up new and interesting menus, dishes and even a new opening or two (finally).  So here is where I am putting my dining riyal in Doha this month. And let me just say, it’s probably the most interesting line-up (old and new) for a few months:

  1. The Melting Pot

You had me at cheese. All of the cheese. So much cheese. This is proof that the 1970s never died, it just got turned into fondue restaurants like this one. Just opened Al Shoumoukh Towers in Al Sadd (with a slew of restaurants seems to be revitalizing dining in this area), this joint is all about cheese in all its forms.

I am fondue of you

The star of the show is their selection of cheese and chocolate fondues – gooey goodness served hot as it comes thanks to burners embedded in the dining table.

Wear your stretchy pants because this place is about big servings and lots of lactose. They also do a breakfast menu. Hold me.

Order: Mexican Fiesta fondue, spicy shrimp roll and Parmesan truffle fries.

2. Greek Souvlaki and Gyros Restaurant

Ahh Doha, sometimes you like to surprise me. Tucked away on the ground  floor of of a residential tower in West Bay is a little slice of Greece. This restaurant does exactly what it says on the tin – souvlaki (meat skewers) and gyros (shredded meat wrapped in a flatbread with salad and sauce) served up by people who are clearly passionate about their homeland. the decor is simple, if a little cramped.

gyro
I need a gryo not a hero

The menu is limited. The service amusing. But the food is fresh and tasty. Special mention to the tangy mustard sauce on the gyro.

I did have one quibble – charging me extra for flatbread to shovel my tzaziki – come onnnnn.

Order: Chicken gyros and the fried feta cheese.

3. Doha Rocks Cafe

Am I the last person to find out about this place? To be fair, it is my fault, given it is actually across the (very busy) road from me. but we recently tried their biryanis and what a revelation they were. Let me be clear about this, in spite of my Indian obsession, I am no expert when it comes to this famous rice dish. But for me, the Doha Rocks rendition hits all the spots and feels, especially the spicy tomato chutney it comes with. Their combination stirfried Chinese noodles were also a surprise hit – fresh ingredients and not too oily.

Order: Egg biryani

4. Dim Sum Friday Brunch at Holiday Villa

I’ve given you my best brunch in Doha, now this is my best value. I’ve been banging on about D’Chopstix, the hidden gem, for months now and have become a regular at their Friday Japanese/Dim Sum Brunch.

shanghai

While I rarely visit the lavish buffet of sushi and sashimi (plus salads, desserts and hot dishes), it’s the all you can eat dim sum part of the brunch that keeps me coming back. Freshly steamed dumplings plus tempura served at your table, all for a humble QR138 a head (including Chinese tea).

This is the closest thing to my Saturday Sydney Yum Cha tradition I could find. Just perfect.

Your May Dining Hit List – Where You Should Be Eating and Drinking in Doha This Month

$

Right – I’m going to keep this month’s Doha dining hit list short. Why? Because looming very soon, halfway through May, is Ramadan. Given that’s an entirely different dining genre (and another post…), I’m going to focus on the next couple of weeks and where you should be spending those precious pre-Ramadan dining days and nights. And what a selection there is. Doha’s restaurants, you’ve done us proud:

  1. Weekend Breakfast at Kafe Ole

This gem of a place is a cafe located inside the Holiday Villa complex and honestly I am kicking myself for not trying sooner. Every Friday and Saturday they serve a range of Malaysian breakfast favorites including Nasi Lemak. It opens from 6am and prices start from QR10. You heard me. QR10! Be warned, this place is popular – so get there early or you can even takeaway.

Must order: Nasi Lemak or the Mee Kare (coconut seafood noodle soup) washed down with iced tea.

2. Foie Gras Menu at Four Seasons Library Bar

I usually steer clear of foie gras, probably because I’ve experienced some very average renditions of this love/hate ingredient. But the foie gras menu in the Library Bar will please both skeptics and hard core lovers of foie gras. With some innovative dishes like a creamy and crispy mille feuille, it really is a decadent way to spend a weeknight.

Must order: The woody and earthy mushroom and foie gras tart.

3. Monday Mussels at Trader Vics

I love me some bivalve action and this is the perfect chance to indulge. every Monday night Trader Vics offers a ginormous, steaming mussel pot (choose from three sauces – Thai, Traditional or Spicy Tomato) for QR99 which includes crusty bread, crispy fries, a dipping sauce and a drink (wine, beer or soft drinks). You’re making money on that deal. the mussels are plump and juicy and made-to-order which means they are fresh and hot on arrival. The vibe is fun (the band comes on at 830pm) and service attentive.

Must order: The spicy tomato mussels pack a punch.

4. Grill and Chill at Cut (Mondrian Doha)

Saturday nights usually see me hibernating in preparation for the looking work week onslaught. But this has shaken me from my stupor. Centered around their canal-side terrace, they fire up the BBQ and serve up some American-influenced food. It’s a la carte but you are brought everything from the menu and can choose to order more of what you fancy. Starters include spicy chicken satays and hush puppies as well as cheddar japaeno biscuits. The grills include local prawns with Old Bay seasoning and szechuan chicken sausages as well as lamb chops. At QR195 with soft drinks and QR345 with alcohol, this is the perfect Saturday hang.

Must order: The slow cooked beef brisket – seriously.

5. Meeting Point at W Doha

Meat sweats. Pure and simple. I love Market and consider it my “my local” – because it has a great buzzy atmosphere, brilliant staff and you are usually likely to run into someone you know there. The W and this restaurant especially seem to know how to tap into what people want. This is one of the best dining deals in town – for those who love their meat. The star attraction is a 1.4kg tomahawk steak (between two people – but this behemoth is made to share with more). Add in selection of side dishes (fries, mac and cheese, the works), three types of sauces plus to further whet your appetite, an appetizer and dessert and you won’t need to eat for a few days.  Combine with their nightly gin and tonic happy hour for best effect. It’s QR790 including a bottle of Argentinian wine or
QR 650 including selected soft drinks.

Must order: Ummmmm…the steak.

I said this would be short and sweet. I guess I was underselling it. There are so many great offers at the moment – get out there and enjoy!

Seven Daytime Dining Options in Doha This Ramadan

$

While I do love seeing the city come alive during the long Ramadan nights (and this year the days will also be long!), it’s nice to have some quality, convenient options around Doha to eat out during the day, especially on weekends.

Check my friends at Marhaba for a full list of Ramadan offerings as they occur and Time Out Doha has a great guide to the Holy Month. But I thought I would give you just a handful of good, solid places for breakfast and lunch over the coming weeks.

  1. Breakfast Santa Monica Breakfast Club

This has become one of the hottest spots for a weekend breakfast in town. As the name suggested, it’s “breakfast heavy” but you will easily find something you will like. With fun and funky interiors, this is not your usual “all day dining” hotel offering, it’s open until 11pm daily. And some good news – they will be offering their budget busting QR80 breakfast buffet during Ramadan. If you are going a la carte, check out the spicy Eggs Benedict.

2Quick Bites at Marriott Marquis Doha

One of the most popular venues for this time of year, this West Bay casual hotspot is back for more this year. Its menu doesn’t throw up many surprises – mainly burgers, sandwiches, salads, pastas and flatbreads – but its spacious (if a little soulless), has valet parking and service is great. I love their plump breakfast corn fritters and you can’t go wrong with their eggs and flatbread. this place gets busy, especially on weekend, so book ahead or go early. For something a little more hearty, head upstairs to their Italian restaurant Cucina – it will be open from 12pm daily.

3. Elements at Four Seasons Doha

Alas, Nobu Doha isn’t open during Ramadan this year, but foodies need not fret. Elements, their excellent and underrated all-day-dining restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. With a menu spanning Indian, Chinese, Asian and Arabic favorites it’s a crowd pleaser without sacrificing on quality. I can highly recommend their lush but punchy Indonesian-style chicken and the delicate Shanghai-style sea bass and any of the handmade dumplings.

4. Stockburger at Holiday Inn Doha

One of the bolters of the year, this smoke-free sports hub will be open from 12pm throughout the holy month. Of course it will be dry but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it’s menu of clever burgers, flatbreads and salad. My picks are the spicy jalapeno burger, the sweet chilli prawns, mushroom and blue cheese flatbread and any of the mason jar treats. As you can see, I’m a fan of those place!

5. W Doha

Here’s a turn up for the foodie books – all of W Doha’s main outlets will be open during the day this Ramadan. this includes Spice Market, Market and La Spiga. All will open from 12pm to 5pm but Market will also open for its famous breakfast buffet (as well as (a la carte) and W Cafe will open from 9am. Order the truffle pizza and crispy prawns at Market and any of the sushi at Spice Market (and special mention for the cupcakes at W Cafe).

6. Lagenda at Holiday Villa

This is an all-day dining restaurant with solid foodie cred. It will be open all day and my advice is to try the Malaysian and Asian specialties on their a la caret menu including the Ipoh Chicken rice and the Curry Laksa Noodles.

7. Cut by Wolfgang Puck

The Mondrian is marking its first Ramadan with style (make sure to check out their Qatari restaurant Walima which will open after sunset each day) and its signature celebrity chef restaurant Cut will be open for breakfast and lunch. This is essentially a steak restaurant so you can go wrong with any of those options on the menu. But I’m a huge fan of their lush smoked salmon pizza and their fresh burrata starter.

puck 2

Special mentions

While not open during the day, for a touch of spice the excellent Sabai Thai at the Westin and Isaan at the Grand Hyatt Doha will be open this Ramadan from sunset onwards. also check out Oishi Sushi for a Japanese fix after iftar. For those over the other side of town during the day,  The Cellar at Oryx Rotana Doha will be open for breakfast and lunch buffet and will also serve its a la carte Spanish-inspired menu.

Three Places to Watch the World Cup in Doha that Also Have Great Food

I’m well and truly on the World Cup bandwagon and I am not ashamed to admit it. Yep, I’m a fair weather football fan. I don’t know my Ronaldo from my Messi, but I have been perfecting my Viking Thunder Clap and I have also discovered an incredible belief that my homeland Australia is perpetually robbed by bad refereeing decisions.

Then….there is this. And this.

I do love a carnival and that’s what the World Cup is. It’s also a great opportunity to eat some great food in even better company. For me, there are three key ingredients to a good viewing experience:

  • Smoke free – so many venues in this city leave me and my clothes stinking
  • Well priced drinks – alcohol in this town is expensive and frankly, it doesn’t always have to be that way. A decent happy hour or special offer is a winning strategy.
  • Great food – sport and food are a match made in heaven. Props to those venues making a real effort with their menus this year.

I have been using this new-found football obsession to actually eat my way around the city’s sports bars and restaurants. Here are my top three scorers for those who value the food as much as the final score:

  1. Hudson Tavern at Mondrian Doha

Best for: Groups of friends

For football fans there are three main options at the city’s newest hotspot but by far my favorite is the casual key Hudson Tavern. Family friendly and smoke free (the bar and restaurant area separated and the hotel has put in extra exhausted fans to ensure it’s comfortable), it has a QR150 free flow of drinks during matches and its usual menu of well executed comfort food (the Hot Chicken burger is a thing of beauty) and a genuine great vibe. There are no bookings so get there early for a good table (it’s QR150 minimum spend per table but this can be used against any food or drink purchases). For something more private also check out the set up at Walima – private majlis (with a minimum spend of QR500 for the table), you and a group of friends can enjoy the game and feast on their Qatari-inspired menu. Rise on the rooftop is more the VIP experience and for QR350 you can enjoy free flow of drinks and food.

What to order:The French Burger (droooool) and the envy inducing nachos.

Happy hour: Daily from 3pm to 7pm

2. Stockburger at Holiday Inn Doha

Best for:Family footy fun

Stadium-style seating

If you aren’t already a fan of Stockburger, then we can’t be friends. Smoke-free (there is a smoking terrace) and very kid friendly, this place is made for watching big games in comfort. Happy hour starts from 12pm and they also have a private viewing box for that hard core fan experience. Doha needs more places like this, especially out of the West Bay loop.

What to order: chilli glazed shrimps, the sticky chicken wings and the Airport Street Burger (laden with mushrooms and special sauce!)

Happy hour: Daily from 12pm

3. Library Bar at the Four Seasons Doha

Best for: Foodies who are also footy fans

What a spread!

Rowdy this place is not but you are guaranteed a clear view of the TV and some excellent food in a plush environment. Also, when things aren’t going to plan on the pitch there is always the view to distract you. The bar opens one hour before the first game of the day so you have time to get settled in, order up and assess the form. Not entirely smoke-free, but spacious enough for this to be not much of a problem.

What to order:Andalusian style baby calamari, hand cut chips and the merguez corn dogs (you heard me)

dogs
Wag the dog

Happy hour: Pull up a chair because this is gooood: QR120 for a bucket of four beers, QR320 for two bottles of wine or QR990 for a bottle of vodka and mixers.

Special mentions: W Doha does these big events so well and this year is no exception. Wahm is the epicenter of their events this year. Best to book ahead to ensure you get a cabana or seat on their covered terrace and they open from 5pm. La Liga Lounge in Hotel Park seems tailor-made for this. They do serve alcohol and the food is also good. Try the nachos or the seafood paella for something more substantial. A minimum spend of QR150 per person and is also smoke free. Trader Vics Doha (they of the lethal cocktails and fun vibe) have also just opened their new extension and is worth a look.

Lounging Around – Your Guide to all the Lounges at Hamad International Airport

Let’s be honest, we all love to travel but most of the time, the process of traveling can drain the life and soul out of you. With the Summer travel season in full swing, for those passing through Hamad International Airport (or, like me, departing from there) on Qatar Airways or another carrier like Sri Lankan, there are a few options to lighten the load and make the process a little more comfy. even the most basic lounge (without the bells and whistles) can make traveling a little better.

IMG_6772
There’s a bear in there…

What’s the best way to access lounges when flying?

  • Flying business or first class – this is a no brainer and expensive option
  • Get status – almost all frequent flyer programs offer some kind of lounge access for silver and above.
  • Have a credit card with lounge access attached – some offer limited lounge access in a certain region or wider depending on the perks. American Express is great for this.
  • Buy a day pass – some lounges offer people traveling the chance to pay for access – usually for a limited time frame
  • Buy a membership – outfits like Priority Pass offer access to more than 1000 lounges around the world
  • With a friend or relative – if you are on the same flight as a mate or soulmate with elite status then they can get you access with them. Qatar airways gives Silver members and above  number of passes each year.
  • With points – some programs allow you to purchase access with points.

If you are looking for a guide to dining options at Doha Airport, then check my updated rundown here. But, if you want a little more luxe in your life, here’s your guide to all the lounges at Hamad International Airport (some you may not know about!) and how to access them:

Al Safwa First Class Lounge

When can I move in? With premium champagne and a sushi bar, this is what lounges should be like. To be honest, it can be a bit daunting accessing the lounge, you walk along a cavernous corridor lined with artworks by the likes of Keith Haring.

There is a restaurant-style dining area with an a la carte menu offering Arabic, Asian and western dishes (the pasta is always a great choice). There is also a snack area with sushi and sandwiches made to order – this is more casual. Make sure you check out the dessert room. Yes. ROOM.

Speaking of rooms, there is a dedicated TV room, with theater-style seating and a huge screen and if you are in need of some TLC, there is an onsite spa with a range of treatments and there is a Duty Free store of your hopes and dreams there also.

Heads up: Spa services are an additional cost.

Al Mourjan Business Class Lounge

planes
Up, up and away

The size of 10 Olympic swimming pools, this has become the lounge by which all are judged. There are two separate dining areas depending on your mood.  Upstairs is the buffet-style restaurant (the butter chicken is a favorite) set up with a long bar serving up wine, beer, spirirts and cocktails. Downstairs tucked away is the “cafe” which serves up freshly made sandwiches and has a small bar – this is my favorite area as it’s usually quieter and the team will make toasted sandwiches to order. In between there are various areas to chill out and charge up your devices.

lounge
Beautifully designed, the Al Mourjan Lounge is considered a world beater

Those looking for privacy are well catered as are the hyper energetic, thanks to a games room complete with foosball, Playstation consoles and an F1 racing simulator.

IMG_0019
Sandwiches made to order? I’m sold!

How to access: Fly Qatar Airways or One World business class (code share with Qatar Airways – I did this recently with a business class flight out of Doha purchased on Cathay Pacific) or, the good news is that you can now purchase access for QR450 or US$120 (if you are flying Qatar Airways). Expensive, yes. But if you have a longer transit, this is a lovely option.

Heads up: Toilet facilities in the upstairs restaurant area are limited.

Oryx Lounge

This is the lounge used by other airlines departing the airport as well as those with certain credit cards. Not as lavish as the main lounges, there is still a buffet of snacks – sandwiches, pastries, soup and salad as well as drinks. There are TV screens, a selection of magazines and a quiet room when it all gets a bit too much.

Like Al Mourjan, they also have a games room with playstations and a foosball table.

IMG_1176
G&T and some brain food in Oryx Lounge on a recent trip

How to access: Fly business or first with a non-Qatar Airways carrier, or have a credit card with lounge access. You can also pay QR200 (US$55) for access.

Heads up: This place can get crowded. Also, alcoholic beverages are available from 11am daily, but you have to ask the staff.

Qatar Airways First Class Lounge

Not to be confused with Al Safwa, this lounge is designated for Qatar Airways Platinum frequent flyers as well as One World Emerald who aren’t flying premium class.

It has two dining areas – one small section for a la carte (Arabic and western dishes)  and one more popular buffet area which has salads, soups, sandwiches and a couple of hot dishes. Alcohol is available but again you must ask the staff for this. There is also a family room and a smoking room as well as two showers (ask at reception for access).

How to access: Hold Emerald status with One World, hold a One World First Class ticket or Gold or Platinum with Qatar Airways flying economy class.

Heads up: This is more environmental than anything else, but the lounge overlooks the huge LED screen on the main airport concourse. So, it can bright and distracting for some.

Qatar Airways Business Class Lounge

This lounge is BUSY. There is the usual buffet set up with hold and cold options as well as wine and beer on display. There are TVs and places to recharge your phone and your mind.

Heads up: Did I say this lounge was busy?

How to access: Open to Qatar Airway Silver Privilege Club holders, One World Sapphire and Emerald and One World Business Class passengers.

Al Maha Lounges

The Al Maha service is one of the airport’s great services, Al Maha Meet and Greet service has lounges scattered all over the airport, according to purpose. They have an arrivals and a departure lounge as well as one for transiting passengers and packages are scaled accordingly – Gold, Platinum and Family. these include a porter service to help with bags as well as access to their comfy lounges (coffee, tea, snacks, soft drinks and TVs).

On my father’s last visit I booked him the arrivals and departures package and they treated him like a king – he’s still talking about it

How to access: Book and pay through their website – cost depends on package and services needed. The transit lounge can be access by Priority Pass cardholders.

Heads up: The transit lounge has shower facilities and alcoholic beverages.

Business and First Class Arrivals Lounge

My favorite perk of flying Premium on Qatar Airways. Anyone holding a Qatar Airways First or business Class ticket can access this lounge which is on the left of Immigration. for Doha arrivals this is a Godsend. Hand your boarding pass at reception and grab a soft drink or tea or coffee and relax.

They have a couple of e-gates (for Qatar residents) as well as an Immigration counter meaning you will be through in minutes.

Heads up: Can get busy at peak times.

How to access: Hold a Qatar Airways business or first class boarding pass.

Other lounges:

Special Assistance Traveler’s Lounge

For travelers needing assistance this lounge is the perfect place to come before a flight. Refreshments are available and there is a specially trained attendant on hand as well as adapted washroom facilities.

Unaccompanied Minors Lounge

This was my dream as a kid, to fly alone, but it can also be stressful. This lounge has TVs, a play area and snacks. Those traveling unaccompanied are cared for at all times and escorted to and from the plane.

How to access: Arrangements should be made at time of booking.

Heads up: For parent’s peace of mind, only designated airline personnel can enter the lounge; no other staff or passengers are allowed access.

Happy lounging!

Your August Hit List – Where You Should Be Eating and Drinking in Doha This Month

$

August is a tricky month – it’s neither here nor there. Some people are still away. Some restaurants are closed or reducing operations. And of course, there is Eid in the middle. But it warms my foodie heart to say the restaurants and cafes in Doha are still slapping on the lipstick and putting themselves out there for our judgement.

Last month I talked up Claw BBQ Doha and the good news is that they are finally opening (August 2), so do yourself a favor and head down to the Corniche area for this fun restaurant. And a heads up, it looks like the 10 day dry period is back this year – so QDC and licensed places will stop serving on 12 August.

But moving along, while there are few “new” restaurants here, there is a lot to keep you busy. Here’s where I think you should be spending your hard earned riyals this month:

  1. Pop Up Garden Bar at Westin Doha
patio
Patio lunch at Westin Doha

The verdant indoor garden area of Hunter’s Room and Grill has been transformed into a pop–up gin bar for the summer dubbed the “Patio”. But if you aren’t into the botanicals, check out their delicious  – and a little decadent – new lunch menu. Burgers are the main event but there are also juicy and perfectly formed crunchy crab cakes and salads. The fries are also worth ordering a second batch. Happy hour starts from 12pm and has some tipples from QR30.

Fly away with me – the Aviary Burger

Must order: The chicken burger is a thing of avocado laden beauty.

2. Afternoon Tea at Mondrian Doha

mondrian
Cake me up

The otherworldy lobby of the Mondrian is the venue for the city’s newest afternoon tea. The familiar and almost cliched (in Doha at least) is given the white glove treatment by the Mondrian. Savories include a mini quiche lorraine and cucumber and salmon sandwiches, while the sweet treats include fruitcake and scones. The classic tea is QR175 and the “rising bubbles” tea (non alcoholic) is QR195. You can treat yoself to a slice of cake for QR27 or a pastry for QR30. The location is dreamy and the service spot on.

Must order: The cakes by the slice include a deliciously retro black forest cake.

3. Summer Taste of Nobu Menu

Nobu Doha continues its tradition of offering an excellent value summer menu. This year’s is kind of like a “greatest hits” from their main menu. The four course tour de force with a salad, sushi, main and dessert – QR295 including a glass of wine. I Servings are generous which means they can be shared and it’s a good way to experience Nobu for the first time (or the 10th!).

Must order: The salmon sashimi salad, cauliflower tempura, the caesar salad (trust me…this isn’t your usual cafe caesar) and of course, the black miso cod.

A short and sharp list this month – but full of variety! Roll on September – when you can expect some new openings, relaunches and of course, my birthday month (just joking…no really).

*Please read my disclaimer here. It’s awesome.

Ahhh…September. I can almost see the end of the year from here  and it looks…cooler. Now we are at the business end of 2018- school is back, vacations over, life resumed – it’s time to check out all of the new goodies being offered by restaurants and bars in Qatar.

There is a LOT going on – some revamped menus, openings and new mojos for some old favorites. So buckle up, grab a snack and here is my essential guide to where to eat and drink in Doha this month:

  1. Mama Rozie

It’s not in a five star hotel or in a “glam” part of town, but I can assure you the food is delicious and made with love. From the family who brought us the cult Snackhouse Sizzlers in Al Khor, this Malaysian/Indonesian/Filipino joint is freshly minted and serving up some great food without fanfare.

Servings are generous and well priced and the noodles are not to be missed. The new branch is in Muntaza next to Three Peppers and has expanded seating. It’s still in soft opening phase, so go after 4pm and pray to the parking Gods as well.

Use your noodle

Must order: Nasi Goreng and the stuffed tofu.

2. The French Olive

I had always placed this cafe in the “never lived up to its potential” sub folder. But with new management and a refreshed menu, there is good reason to pay a return visit to one of their two branches. Breakfasts have gone from meh to interesting and they have also beefed up their serving sizes. Later this month they will also had a Weekend Brunch buffet.

Eggs eleven

Must order: This is a great place for breakfast, go for the eggs benedict.

3. Friday Brunch at the Sheraton Doha

Shamefully, I always seem to ignore the Sheraton’s restaurants and I also realized I hadn’t been to their Friday brunch since my inaugural weekend outing in Doha in 2007! With a new chef on deck, there is a refreshed energy in their offerings.

A good example of this is their Friday Brunch, which has had a complete makeover. Unlike some of its neighbors, this is more like a “family” lunch – no DJ and no party vibe.

sheraton 1
World. Of. Hummous

Rather groups of friends and families enjoying the food. On a recent visit there was a “World of Hummous” stand with six kinds of the dip as well as a caviar bar and a live show of meringue making with liquid nitrogen. The day we went they also had a burger tower. Yep. You heard me.

sheraton 3
Making magic

Must order: The legendary Umm Ali as well as indulging in the freshly made Japanese tempura.

4. Lazy Saturday at Opal by Gordon Ramsay

Yet another restaurant that has been overtaken by newer, shinier things around town, but also worth a second look. Personally I felt this place lost its way for a while there, but I recently checked out their Saturday brunch to find things were back on track. An a la carte concept, you can order as much as you like and the menu heavily favors English comfort food – fish and chips, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding – you get the drift.

opal 2
A salt and battery

But a “true” brunch, they also have a very tasty selection of egg dishes. Another highlight is their long list of bloody mary cocktails (a St Regis tradition) and gin bar. Saturday is the new Friday!

Must order: The fish and chips is perfectly battered and crispy and the Opal burger (served mini style) is as moreish as I remember.

5. Joe’s Crab Shack

If you can handle the kitsch decor and hourly “Doha’s Got Talent”-style formation dance performances by the staff, this is a fun place for seafood lovers. And I have to say, I found the quality of the seafood on offer excellent.

Joes 1
Before the mayhem

The mussels were plump and juicy, the crab sweet and tender and the prawns cooked well. My only gripe was the seasoning (we opted for cajun) was a little on the salty side, but that didn’t stop us from soaking up the sauce with the baton of garlic bread it came with.

joes 2
Ger cracking

They encourage you to get down and dirty with the crab by providing gloves and a bib. Another big tick for their bottomless refills for soft drinks.

Must order: Any of the crab dishes of course but mussel lovers will also be pleased.

So foodies, that’s September covered! Have a delicious month and stay tuned for my vegan/veggie guide which will drop soon.

Seven New Restaurant Openings to Look Forward to in Qatar in Before the End of 2018

With a slew of new restaurant openings it looks like the last quarter of 2018 is going to be one of the most interesting  and delicious Qatar foodies have seen.

After the uncertainty of 2017, investment and creativity is flowing and food lovers have a lot to look forward to. Here’s a look at what’s opening in coming weeks and months and a peek at what we can look forward to in 2019.

A word of caution about opening dates – as is always the case, they are fluid. But buckle up this should be a fun end of the year!

La Mar

Doha’s future dining has a distinctly Peruvian tint. An offshoot of Peruvian celebrity chef Gaston Acurio, this place at the Intercontinental Doha has foodies buzzing. The menu is heavily seafood based – his signature dish is ceviche – the restaurant focusses will have both indoor and outdoor seating.  Peruvian food is a perfect storm of  the best of Japanese, Chines and Spanish food and the restaurant has also promised its drinks list will include Pisco (yaaaassss).

Opening date: October 2018

Manko Doha:

Another of Acurio’s brainchilds, more of a bar with great food, this outlet (also at the Intercontinental Doha, which seems to have a new energy) has gained cult status in Paris.  Expect amped up cocktails and unique Nikkei cuisine, a combination of Peruvian and Japanese influenced dishes sushi, ceviches and more.

Maya Doha:

I visited the Dubai branch of this restaurant waaaaay back in 2006 and have been anticipating its arrival ever since. From the sprawling empire of Richard Sandoval (who also has Toro Toro and Zengo in Doha), this is his homage to Mexican food with a modern twist and it’s located at the Kempinski Doha (in West Bay). I’m looking forward to this opening proving there is more to Mexican food than tacos.

Opening date: October 2018

La Vista 55:

Located in the venue formerly known as the Intercontinental Doha the City’s  skyhigh bar Strata which struggled despite the best views in the city, this is one of the more surprising new openings of 2018. A “vintage Cuban-themed bar”, it will feature a live Cuban band and food from the island. All staff – including the band – are Cuban and they will have a range of cocktails and beers (including a gluten free one!). The lounge will be over two floors and include a restaurant area. Expect dishes like Ropa Vieja (Cuban-style shredded beef) and more.

Opening date: TBC but looks like late October.

Tahitian Village at Trader Vics

Trader Vics is a very underrated venue in Doha – drinks, dinner, brunch it delivers on all three with a stunning location. And who can argue with cocktails the size of bathtubs? Their new extension – the Tahitian Village – ups seating capacity by 200, includes an outdoor bar, a new indoor bar area and a revamped menu. It will be the biggest outdoor venue in Doha. . I had a glimpse of this place on a recent visit and am predicting it will be packed from day onePass me the Tiki Tiki Puka Puka!

Opening date: TBC but September/October

Novikov:

Originating in London’s Mayfair, this Japanese/Chinese fusion restaurant is beloved by celebrities and scenesters around the world. The restaurant is in the heart of Katara’s long-awaited Katara Plaza, a mix of luxe stores that will host performances, fashion shows and other events. The restaurant will have a “seafood market” concept and an open kitchen. Look for their signature sushi rolls. Heads up, given the location it’s likely to be dry.

STK

The grand dame of Doha’s hotels, the Ritz Carlton, is undergoing a full renovation and now it’s time for the restaurants to match the lush rooms and suites. STK is an American-style steakhouse, billed as “not your Daddy’s steakhouse” (PS I don’t think my Dad ever went to a steakhouse unless the Black Stump counts?). Taking over the space formerly occupied by the much misunderstood La Mer, there will be big steaks, a DJ and lots of meat sweats. Can we just take a moment to remember the once great Admirals, that home of pub food, sports and views of the marina. Now closed, it will morph into B Lounge, an offshoot of the incredibly popular Buddha Bar. Not sure how the Admirals regulars will feel about that…but I’m looking forward to this place! There is also a French brasserie in the works.

STK
Meat sweats on the horizon

Opening date: STK by end of 2018 and B Lounge first quarter 2019.

There are also rumors about a new celebrity chef led restaurant on the site of the old Antica Pesa (anther wasted opportunity) at Marsa Malasz Kempinksi.

Also in soft opening/soon to open stage is Paris legend Le Train Bleu (at Al Hazm Mall) and its more casual sister Le Petit Train Bleu at Doha Festival City. Special mention should go to the new hotel openings in coming months and in 2019 – all brands with solid foodie credentials. This includes Centara Residence and Suites Doha (expect great Thai food), Park Hyatt Doha and Mandarin Oriental Doha.

I know I may have missed a few and it seems the scene is changing at a rapid pace. But the future looks bright for foodies in Qatar!

La Mar, La Vista 55 and Maya – Doha’s 3 Hottest New Restaurants and Bars Reviewed

$

It seems like they came all at once – a flurry of new restaurants and bars opening in Doha within days of each other after a long period of stagnation in the food scene. Always willing to put myself in the line of fire, I checked out Peruvian restaurant La Mar, Mexican offering Maya and Cuban joint La Vista 55 – all in the name of research – and there’s a lot to be excited about. Here’s my take on each of them, what to expect and what you should order:

La Mar:

I’m not going to lie, La Mar and its upstairs bar Manko are among the most exciting things to happen to the dining scene here since Nobu opened three years ago. The building itself – on the beach at the Intercontinental Doha – is a surprise – two levels occupying a prime site on the beach – soaring ceilings, sleek interiors and views for days.

IMG_1657
Oh La La La Mar

The food, is also on another level. Don’t expect Peruvian food to come and slap you in the face with its spiciness. This is a subtle cuisine and a fascinating blend of Spanish, Chinese and Japanese influences – many recipes combine chilli with soy sauce and cumin and it is very seafood heavy. You also see the addition of cheese in some dishes – for example a scallops served on the shell with a creamy cheese sauce.

IMG_1703
Seafood and eat it

I’ve already been to this restaurant twice – once as a guest and once paying my way – and both times the food was spot on and fellow diners are showing similar enthusiasm. A pleasant surprise are the prices – comparatively pocket friendly by Doha standards (my recent visit saw drinks, three starters and two mains come in around QR550). Manko, with three separate bar areas and views across the beach, will become an instant favorite.

Must order: Lomo Saltado (Peruvian steak and chips – trust me on this one), any of the cebiches (seafood lightly cured with lime juice) and the seafood rice (Peru’s take on the paella – perfectly cooked seafood on a bed of spiced rice). the restaurant also has a selection of drinks made with Pisco, so it would be a shame not to try one! Note: Manko opens this week.

Maya

I’m so happy to see the excellent and prolific US-based chef Richard Sandoval back to his best in Doha. Maya, which will fully open soon, sticks to traditional, simple and well executed Mexican food. I’m also a fan of a place that lets you customize your own margarita (the long bar is a highlight of the interior design).

IMG_1626 (2)
Guac on

Enchiladas, tacos and fajitas all feature, but there is also guacamole made with fresh tuna, ceviche  and more substantive dishes like a braised lamb barbecoa (shredded or “pulled”) and simply delicious. The vibe is very relaxed – I’m happy to see more restaurants go for this rather than stilted and serious service. Maya makes it a trio of Doha restaurants for Sandoval – with the improved Zengo and Toro Toro added to the mix (he jettisoned the once great  Isla and I’m sad to say it shows in the food).

Must order: This is a no-brainer. The guacamole is made fresh to order and at your table and the fish tacos are crunchy, spicy and addictive. Special mention to the Mexican style baby corn – where has this been all my life?

La Vista 55

Cuba meets Qatar 55 floors up. Formerly a very gloomy and nondescript bar, La Vista 55 at the Intercontinental Doha The City injects new life into what is great space with a million riyal view. The place has had a makeover, with colorful murals and a band that plays nightly. With Cuban bar staff and a chef from Havana, the food is one of the most surprising elements.

3de6b008-3adc-4f22-a781-b19394547305
Havana Nights

Dubbed “homestyle” Cuban food, it’s heavy on the comfort and is paired nicely with the cocktails which run from the traditional (mojitos) to the not-so-traditional (one is infused with cigar smoke). Opening to the public from 1 November, happy hour will be daily from 5pm to 8pm.

Must order: The crisp yuca fries are a revelation as are the turkey ham croquettes which are crunchy, creamy and downright dreamy. The tres leches cake is also the perfect sweet end to your night out.

Future state: Keep an eye out for Indego 360 by chef Vineet. Billed as the “highest Indian restaurant’ in the world at 42 stories up, this chef loves tricked up presentation and bold flavors. it’s located in one of the twin towers at the entrance to The Pearl. We’re also still waiting to see Doha’s take on Novikov, the seafood heavy Chinese/Japanese international favorite which has no opening date but many hoping before the end of 2018.

Your December Dining Hit List – Where you Should be Eating and Drinking in Doha this Month

$

0

And just like that…it’s December. For those seeking a little more dining action than mince pies, turkey and tired tinsel, have I got some delicious and diverse dining out treats for you. From farm to table to luxurious sushi, here are the best places to drink and dine in Doha (and around) this month according to Life on the Wedge…

  1. Hudson Tavern

Fast becoming one of the the most chilled places in town, Hudson Tavern has spiced up its comfort food menu, which now offers more variety and bang for your buck. Tex mex and burger lovers should rejoice. Their fish taco is crunchy and spicy goodness while their new “Towering Inferno” burger is two patties, japanenos and a firey sauce one a proper potato bun.

all the burgers

Special mention also for the bulgogi starter – lush Korean style sliced beef served between lettuce leaves.  the atmosphere is fun, the in house DJ spins retro tunes and it’s just a great place to hang out (yeah I said that).

Let’s taco about it

Must order: The fish tacos and classic fish and chips

Hudson Tavern, Mondrian Doha,

2. Get Social Brunch at the Crowne Plaza Doha

In terms of foodie cred, this hotel is beyond underrated. Outside of the West Bay bubble, the Crowne Plaza punches above its weight, with an excellent Brazilian restaurant. But its all-day dining venue, Aramede is also a winner.

Their Friday brunch has been revamped – with a wider selection, churrassco beef and chicken cuts from Rodizio, a live band and an outdoor BBQ. Where this brunch excels is their seafood selection – lobster, prawns, crab and more all cooked to order. Throw in a roving cocktail cart and I may move in.

Must order: The lush lobster BBQd to perfection and the momos.

Crowne Plaza the Business Park, 4408 7777

3. Baladna Farm

Great for a day trip or to show visitors, this unique place is open again for the season. While the kids and visitors may love the zipline and bikes in the park and the novelty of the world’s most pampered cows in action, I love the restaurant. Located at Al Khor, the restaurant highlights produce from the dairy as well as Qatari and Arabic cuisine. the menu runs from the expected – meat shwarma and locally made labneh to the unexpected – mango hummous and potatoes and meat kibbeh. You can also hit up the fridges for freshly made cheeses and milk to take home.

Location: North Road, Exit 44,  Umm Al-Hawaya Area  at Al Khor and  Al-Thakhira

4035 8833

Must order: Mango hummous – don’t knock it until you try it!

4. Signature by Sanjeev Kapoor

Possibly one of the more underrated celebrity chef restaurants in the city, this Indian outlet at the Crowne Plaza West Bay is worth a second look. While the interiors scream airline lounge, the food is another story. Thoughtfully presented, the dishes are familiar yet also innovative. The butter chicken is silky and a little sweet thanks to the addition of mango. The South Indian style prawn curry is lush and creamy, served in a hollowed out coconut. A recent visit made me wonder why I had left it so long between dinners. Service is knowledgable and passionate about the food.

Must order: the prawn curry and the samosa chaat – for a taste of north and south.

5. Sushi Omakase at Nobu Doha

Many people tell me that I write about Nobu a lot. I guess I do – I’m a regular and a paying customer and I think it’s one of the best restaurants in Doha. As a diner and someone who writes about food, I also like how the restaurant’s team doesn’t rest on their laurels – coming up with offers that both enable new customers to try their menu while also keeping regulars happy. their Saturday Sushi Omakase is a great example of that.

Just 10 spots are offered every week and you get to sit at the sushi bar in the action. The menu changes weekly depending on the fish delivery and the chef. It’s QR600 for 13 types of sushi (believe me you will leave full) plus soup and three starters.

Must order: It’s chef’s choice and this changes weekly. My advice is to be open to what they offer and try something new!

Nobu Doha, Four Seasons Doha, 4494 8600

That’s all folks! Keep a watch in coming days for my annual “Best Eats of the Year” post (some surprises are promised)!

PS by popular demand I have added map links to each restaurant – just click the name in the listing!

Sticker Shock – Seven Places to Enjoy Happy Hour Post Qatar Alcohol Tax Increase

$
0
0

It came like a bolt in the dark in the dying days of 2018 – the new “sin tax” due to take effect on 1 January 2019 would in fact include alcohol. Some labelled it the end of days. Unprecedented apocalypse-looming style lines formed at the QDC. Wailing was heard.

Now, the dust has settled, QDC has lowered some of its prices ever so slightly, hotels have taken stock and we can see start to see what this actually means to the average diner and drinker. As a keen observer of the food and beverage trends in this city, and having spoken to drinkers, hoteliers and others in the industry:

Many hotels in the city generate much of their income from F&B and those outlets are really going to feel the pinch. January is traditionally quieter because of the post festive hangover as well as people having less cash on hand, but anecdotally some hotel restaurants and bars are seeing a 40 percent drop in business. I think we will see in the true impact in February when things start to return to “normal”. Some hotels are still waiting to see how the market reacts and have left prices relatively unchanged. A good example is the Belgian Bar – they have stopped their popular happy hour (boooo!) for now but left their many of their bar prices at pre-2019 levels. As you can imagine – it’s a changing landscape so prices can change.

Friday brunches may become a rare treat. Several have now crossed the QR500+ Rubicon or hovering very close to it and when you factor in transport, baby sitting for families etc, it becomes an expensive proposition for a weekend indulgence. Add this to cost of living increases across the board and this may be the “treat” that gets jettisoned for other expenses. On the plus side, many hotels are trying to “value add” to their brunches – the Four Seasons have added gin and vodka bars and some like St Regis Doha and the very popular Toro Toro have kept theirs stable.Deals can still be found. Some Friday brunches are also starting to pop up on deal sites like The Entertainer, Mybook and Advantage Club.

BUT for many places, the happy hour is not dead – it’s just been revamped and yes, is a little more expensive. Many tried to kill them off in the earlier, dark moments of 2019. But I have good news! There are still relative bargains to be had (and frankly at the moment somewhat more reasonable than drinking at home when a humble bottle of wine now costs QR200 plus). Hotels are also keen to keep their slice of the market, so expect more specials and offers in the coming months. Yes, in most cases, prices have increase by five or so riyals, but many have made an effort to keep them reasonable.

So here are seven happy hours I’m loving in the “new world order”:

Library Bar at Four Seasons Doha

The Four Seasons has taken a more softly softly approach to the tax increase and it’s paying off. Their nightly happy hour at this Doha favorite runs from 5pm to 8pm and drinks sit at QR50 for a martini, QR45 for a generous glass of wine and QR40 for bottled beer. Add in the plush bar environment, free nibbles and renowned Four Seasons service and this will become a regular haunt.

Martini madness at Four Seasons Doha

Tahitian Village at Trader Vics

Hard to beat this bayside location and even harder to beat their prices. Happy hour is daily from 4pm to 8pm and the views and the vibe are both perfect. Expect to pay QR35 for their cocktails, QR30 for bottled beer and QR30 for house wine.

Tahitian vllage Doha
Tahitian Vibes at Trader Vics (photo supplied)

Morimoto Doha

This gem of a Japanese restaurant at the Mondrian Doha has a very underrated and stylish little bar area. Their new happy hour offer is as tantalizing as their menu – QR150 for unlimited selected drinks from their menu from 6pm to 8pm daily. Another bonus? It’s smoke free! It’s downstairs neighbor CUT Doha also has a decent happy hour where drink start at QR30 and there are discounts on your bill if you stay for dinner.

Morimoto Doha

Claw BBQ

One of the stand out openings for 2018, this fun bar and restaurant has introduced a Saturday all-day happy hour. This means 50 percent of selected drinks the whole day – that’s one way to eaaaaaase into the work week! FYI their daily happy hour is 50 percent off from 5pm to 8pm.

Maybe not on the happy hour menu but you get the gist…

Rose and Thistle

This cult favorite pub continues to keep its loyal customers happy. Sundays from 8pm to 12pm you can get a pint of Carlsberg for QR35, a bucket of five beers for QR150. Ladies also get the first two drinks free between 8pm and 10pm. They have bands playing regularly and serve up some decent pub grub.

C.mondo at Centro Capital Doha

A small business-focused hotel in Bin Mahmoud which punches above its weight on the food and beverage front, the Centro Capital packs a pocket friendly big punch at happy hour. A selection of house beverages are just QR30 from 12pm to 8pm – you’re making money at those prices (almost!)

Sip and Savor at Spice Market

The original happy hour favorite – sip and savor at Spice Market – is an institution. And luckily for its fans, it remains intact if a little pricier. Prices are 50 percent off selected cocktails, wines and beers but best of all, the free snack from their menu remains. Crispy spicy prawns for me please!

PR-wise this move leaves Qatar in an interesting place ahead of 2022. It’s growing as a stopover destination thanks to Qatar Airways strong brand presence and great offers, but is a tougher proposition for longer stays. And hotels have also come to the party and reduced their prices to help create attractive accommodation packages. This tax makes that sell a little harder. I’m sure this will be resolved in the longer term but, at the moment, this is reality.

There is a lot to look forward to on the dining scene in Qatar in 2019 – hopefully we can see past this blip and enjoy the new offerings!

Seven Reasons to Visit Doha in 2019

$
0
0

It’s official – Doha is one of the world’s hottest destinations right now and this has been confirmed by both the Forbes Travel Guide and the New York Times. And with the 2019 Asian Football Cup under its belt, the 2022 World Cup coming in hot and a string of exciting new openings and events in between, there is no better time to visit Doha.

In addition, Qatar has been named one of the safest countries in the world and thanks to the nation’s flagship carrier, you can easily access Doha from one of its 160 plus destinations around the globe.

Here are my top reasons by you should visit Doha in 2019:

  1. It’s Visa Free for passport holders of more than 80 countries

Now one of the most accessible countries in the world, Qatar offers visa free arrival for passport holders of more than 80 countries. Citizens of these countries will not need to apply or pay for a visa; instead, a multi-entry waiver will be issued at the airport, upon presentation of a valid passport (valid for a minimum of six months) and a confirmed onward or return ticket. Qatar Airways now flies to more than 160 destinations from its’ home at Hamad International Airport and has an easy connection to a host of destinations in Europe, Asia and beyond. It’s the perfect stopover destination for those long haul flights to US, Australia and Europe. And, Qatar Airways also offers stopovers at Doha hotels starting from USD$23.

2. It has a vibrant and diverse food scene

Arabic, Qatari, Indian, Filipino, Nepalese, Chinese, American, Mexican, Malaysian – the food options in Doha reflect its diverse population. Qatar’s food scene has come into its own with something to suit every budget. From celebrity helmed restaurants and temples of haute cuisine through to pocket friendly street food, there is something to suit every palate and budget. Coffee lovers will be well served with Qatar experiencing a caffeine fuelled boom in speciality coffee shops. My picks? Nobu Doha for a “big night out” and views to die for or hit Souq Waqif for some local flavors from cafe Shay Al Shamous.

3. It’s a culture vulture’s paradise

Qatar has invested heavily in its cultural treasures and is a haven for art and culture lovers. With the new National Museum of Qatar and 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum both due to open this year, there will be even more to keep you busy. The centerpiece is the Museum of Islamic Art and inside you’ll find what’s arguably the country’s most impressive collection of artefacts from across the Islamic world.

For a different perspective on the country’s history, head to Musherib Museums. Bin Jelmood House, Company House, Mohammed Bin Jassim House and Radwani House each take up a different aspect of Qatari life, from the evolution of family roles to the history of oil in the region and slavery. That’s all before you hit the galleries like the surprising Mathaf Museum of Modern Arab Art and the funky Firestation Gallery with its revolving exhibitions. You can also experience arts, culture and heritage at places like the extraordinary private museum owned by Sheikh Faisal Al Thani.

4. The Insta-Worthy Scenery

Doha is a photographer’s dream – from the picturesque Corniche to the rolling desert dunes. You don’t have to travel far to experience the “desert life”. In many cases, just an hour from the city, you can dune bash, swim in the spectacular Inland Sea or visit the Singing Sand Dunes. If you are on a longer visit, you can camp our over night, eat a BBQ feast and experience Bedouin life. Head west to see the eery but spectacular East West/West East sculptures by Richard Serra in the desert near Zekreet or stay close to Doha and visit Katara Cultural Village for the amphitheater and views of the bay.

5. It has a hotel for every budget

Doha used to be a haven for five star hotels, but as the World Cup looms, there is now something to suit most budgets. Don’t get me wrong, you can find some of the most luxe hotel suites in the world here – like the whimsical Mondrian Doha and the old school glam of the Four Seasons Doha and the Ritz Carlton. But those looking for something more budget busting or for a long term stay has plenty to choose from. Check out my blogging colleague Brian’s blog Qatar Quick which has a great guide to some of these options and unbiased reviews.

6. It’s heaven for shoppers

From the gleaming malls to the winding lanes of Souq Waqif, there is something for everyone (even those proclaiming not to be shopaholics!) in Doha. Malls like the Mall of Qatar and Doha Festival City house the high end designer labels as well as the more accessible high street brands. At least three new malls are expected to open in 2019 – so make those lists now!For some local flair, head to Souq Waqif for colorful pashminas, spices important from India and Pakistan and more. But for something truly unique check out the gift shop at the Museum of Islamic Art.

7. The warm and generous Qatari Hospitality – Qatar and the Qataris have been welcoming travelers for generations. It’s ingrained in the culture and exists even today. Those flying in on Qatar Airways get to experience it first with their warm welcome onboard. But this extends to Qatar’s people who are generous and welcoming – it will be a visit to remember!

Your March 2019 Dining Hit List – Where to Eat and Drink in Doha this Month

$
0
0

That escalated quickly! It’s March already and frankly I am still unprepared. Luckily there are some great drinking and dining options around Qatar to ease me into the stark reality of a new month. This month’s list focuses mainly on outdoor venues – we all know summer is fast approaching so lets enjoy this while we can. Here’s where you should be dining out in Doha this month:

  1. Lo Spaghetto

A longtime cult favorite which I have recently rediscovered. It’s on the list because of the well executed Italian and crossover classics but also for its sublime outside dining area.

Secret garden

A rarity in Doha, this tree fringed venue is dreamy and the perfect place to enjoy the dwindling days of cooler weather. The food does what it says on the tin – but for me it’s really about that terrace. You would never guess this restaurant was just a stone’s throw from one of the most manic streets in the city!

Oodles of noodles

Must order: The seafood spaghetti is a pescatarian’s dream and the mushroom risotto earthy and satisfying.

Four Seasons Doha Friday Brunch

The big Daddy of Doha brunches has upped its game…again.
We all know brunch is an expensive proposition in Doha now because of the tax hikes. So hotels offering brunch have to work harder to make it good value for diners.

With 17 live stations including fresh seafood (including one cooking bowls of steaming mussels to order), Mexican, Chinese (where you can watch the chef create your meal via a go pro strapped to his head) and Arabic and Indian grills.Other favorites were a Peking duck station and a cheese room (yes a room). Drink options are many and varied – there is a roving margarita cart as well as one serving three kinds of sangria. You can also prop up the gin bar or just choose wine, beer or sparkling.
Brunch is QR540 with alcohol and the set up works well for big groups as well as couples (and there is a kids club).

The price is QR540 including alcohol but in terms of bang for your dining buck – this brunch is hard to beat

Must order: the Peking Duck and the Indian curries. Actually, everything. Pace yourself

Breakfast at Sultan Brahim

This could be one of the best kept secrets in Doha’s dining scene – and I don’t say that lightly. Located poolside at the St Regis, this Lebanese restaurant recently started serving breakfast.

Breakfast spread

Grab an outside seat on the terrace and order from the short and sharp menu of Middle Eastern breakfast classics. The shakshouka has a great hit of spice and their famous hoummous (which takes three days to make) is creamy and moreish. You can indulge in shisha (if that’s your poison) and dishes are well priced (QR35 to QR40) and they even have set menus.

sultan Brahim Doha
Redefining comfort food

Must order: The fatteh with meat with its mix of textures and flavors is comfort food in a bowl.

With two new hotels opening in Doha this month, there is bound to be more to indulge in. also keep an eye out for my updated guide to the best brunches in Doha – coming soon! Happy March Madness!

Your April 2019 Doha Dining Hit List – Where You Should be Eating and Drinking this Month

Wait…wasn’t it just February a red hot minute ago? April is here already and frankly I am not ready for it. Just a few weeks until Ramadan, Summer is looming and….Well, at least we have some amazing new restaurants, menus and dining concepts in Doha to ease us through the transition. Here is Life on the Wedge’s Doha dining hit list – your top eating and drinking in tips for April (new addition this month – a price guide) so there is no excuse not to eat well this month:

  1. Izu

It took me two visits but this restaurant at the brand spanking new Mandarin Oriental Doha has grown on me. The menu of both upstairs and downstairs is drawn from the Mediterranean – Italy, France, Spain, Greece. Downstairs is a more casual all day dining (and dry), upstairs is more formal (and licensed). On a recent visit I devoured a well executed lobster pasta – huge chunks of the shellfish lightly coated in a tangy tomato sauce. a mushroom risotto that is both earthy and funky in all the right ways.

The Spanish style cheese croquettes were crunchy and the creamy filling steaming hot and a burrata salad is a fresh start to your meal. The service upstairs is old school white table cloths and I especially loved the touch of serving the bread with hunks of freshly cut and juicy tomatoes and a drizzle of olive oil.

There is also a secret bar up here, hidden behind an obscure door – it can fit maybe 12 at a squeeze and has all the speakeasy feels. The downstairs has an outdoor cafe that takes full advantage of the incredible open air square and the outside cooling system. While they have an excellent dessert list, I recommend you head to Gelato where the chefs there are shaking up the dessert scene. the icecream is made on premises and concoctions include medjool date, local honey and kiwi fruit.

I -scream you scream…

Must eat: the lobster pasta and duck and quinoa salad

Price guide: starters from QR65; mains from QR90

Details: Izu, Mandarin Oriental, Msherib, Doha

2. La Parisienne

A slice of Paris in Doha – this boulangerie has opened in the Intercontinental Doha the City and is an instant hit. All items – including croissants, pastries, elaborate cakes and concoctions and even quiches and pate encroutes are baked on the premises.

The space (located on the serviced apartment side of the hotel) has been given a makeover with fun belle epoche murals and service staff in black dresses and aprons. Kitsch? Yes, but the food is worth it. I love the custardy salmon quiche I tried and the croissants are perfect for a quick breakfast.

They have a range of special offers throughout the day – eg juice, coffee and two viennoiseries for QR49 for breakfast. And you want to know the kicker? Not only is it open until 10pm, it’s also licensed. Yep, you can have a cheeky glass of red with your quiche on the way home.

Must order: The decedent Paris Brest pastry and the traditional pate en croute

Price guide: Pastries start from QR12, the more elaborate ones from QR25.

La Parisienne, Intercontinental Doha – The City, West Bay

Tarde Chevre at La Mar Doha

If you are looking for a chilled place to enjoy a non-brunch Friday lunch, the new offering at La Mar is what you are looking for. It is a set menu and chef’s choice, meaning you might not get the same dish as your neighboring table. Hell, I love a bit of mystery.

The dishes I tried on a recent Friday visit were exceptional. Among the many highlights were a fish bao bun, served with a creamy and dreamy remoulade and of course the now renowned cebiches (seafood lightly cured in lime juice and spices).

But the knockout dish from the kitchen was a seafood masterpiece – each prawn, piece of fish or shellfish was treated to its own method of cooking be it fried or braised – finished off with a tangy Peruvian chilli sauce. We cleaned our plate. the price includes water but not drinks, but this is all about the food and THAT view of the beach.

If you have one Friday foray left in you before Ramadan, make your reservation here.

Must order: Just let the chef decide – you won’t regret it.

Price guide: The menu including all dishes and water is QR295. Drinks are separate.

La Mar, Intercontinental Doha, West Bay

So, there you have it – my guide to eating and drinking in Doha in April. I hope you have a delicious month ahead!

Five Great Restaurants to Try That Are Not in West Bay or The Pearl

Newsflash! Great food in Doha does start at The Pearl and end just before you hit the Corniche. There are some great restaurants offering really diverse cuisines outside the rarefied confines of these two areas – and I’m here to help you find them.

The options include – Spanish, Thai, brunch classics, Brazilian meat palace and a homegown Qatari concept. And all have the Life on the Wedge seal of approval.

So grab your friends and get out there and try these gems (and if those mates don’t want to go that far, question whether or not they are REALLY your friends) – maybe add in a nearby happy hour for extra value/allure.

The Cellar

I recently rediscovered this place and what a revelation it was. Tucked away inside the Oryx Rotana, it pumps out well executed versions of Spanish/Med classics like paella and heft tapas. But delve a little deeper in the menu and you will find some stunners. The slow cooked beef cheeks is tangy and fall apart tender while the crisp cauli bites will have you ordering more for later. You can enjoy a jug of sangria or a glass of well chosen Spanish wine and they have almost daily specials like Tapas Tuesday to make it even better value.. There is no pretension, just good food and good service.

Must order: It would be criminal of me not to suggest the cauliflower bites which are dusted in parmesan.

Arnag

When I am asked what the best burger in Qatar is, there is only one answer – the Jboor burger at Arnag. Made with prime Angus beef, the size and quality is just right. Located just inside the Souq al Wakra this place also offers unique takes on comfort food. Check out the chicken sliders which are coated in Pafki chips and topped with pickles. And you can’t leave without trying the now famous Japanese cheesecake – a fluffy sensation with just the right amount of wobble. OK yes, it can be a drive for some, but jump on the Doha Metro and make a trip of it.

Happy National Burger Day ..

A post shared by arnag (@arnag.qa) on

Must order: any of the burgers (the chicken burger is also great) and the Japanese cheesecake.

Khao San

Known for its all you can eat Thai BBQ, this place in eternally busy Bin Mahmoud also has a menu of Thai classics that keeps diners coming back time and time again. Their versions of Thai food are as good as they come in this city and they are pocket friendly to boost. Do come for the BBQ but you should also check out the Thai hotpot – a steaming clay bowl of aromatic broth that you dip in meat, seafood and veggies. I’m still feeling the effects of the three alarm spicy papaya salad and the barometer of decent Thai food – the pad Thai more than passes muster.

Must order: Pad Thai, the fried rice and the Thai BBQ.

Rodizio

This place located inside the Crowne Plaza – The Business Park is the number one restaurant in Doha on Tripadvisor – and for good reason. A Brazilian-style steakhouse, the food is tasty, the cocktails lethal and the staff are among the friendliest and best informed in the city. the small but interesting salad bar is worth a visit and they have recently beefed up (see what I did there?) their free starters – now offering little empanadas as well as the Brazilian cheesy bread. There are 12 cuts of meat on offer for the Churrascaria including duck, flap steak and picanha. also, for those who like an early dinner (ahem…me) they have special offers if you dine before 7pm.

Must order: the meat sweats inducing all-you-can-eat BBQ (special mention to the palate cleansing cinnamon dusted pineapple) and one of their cocktails.

The Brunchery

This place is brand spanking new but there is already a lot to like about it. Located on C Ring Road in al Mana Towers, I’m hoping it will lead a bit of a revitalization of this moribund and frankly underused strip. As the name suggests, the menu leans heavily on American style brunch and breakfast items including eggs, pancakes, waffles. But there are also sandwiches, salads and main menu items. I recently tried their Buffalo burger – which had just the right hit of spiciness and a well made bun (made in house apparently). Sides include the usual fries but also macaroni cheese! They have bottomless filter coffee, a big and airy dining room and relentlessly cheery staff – it’s the kind of place you want to plant yourself with a group of mates for the afternoon.

Must order: The burgers and the Lumberjack’s Breakfast (flannel shirt not included).

What’s your favorite non-WestBay/The Pearl eatery?

Your September Dining Hit List – Where to Eat and Drink in Doha This Month

Ahhhh sweet September. My favorite month for so many reasons. And also the month that – post Summer – Doha’s food and drink scene starts to crank into gear. Lots to get excited about this September – some new openings and new offers to keep you fed and watered. Here’s my list of must eats in Doha for September.

The Frying Scotsman

I love it when hotels push the boat out (see what I did there?). The Radisson Blu Doha has a dozen food and beverage outlets – the biggest offering in the city. It also has a loyal fan base. They have now turned their moribund seafood restaurant into a dedicated fish and chip joint, and the result is glorious. the menu does what it says on the tin – fish and chips – done well. The batter is light and crunchy and the chips, well the British say they are not yet “proper”, but I enjoyed them. All fish and chops come with mushy peas and tartare sauce. Other menu items include British meat pies. the pastry is perfect and the fillings spot on.

Try the lamb-based Scotch pie for a real taste of the UK. Check out the tartan-inspired interiors as well as the replica of the Flying Scotsman running on the model train tracks around the restaurant. This place is perhaps my favorite find of the Summer.

Must order: The hefty cod and chips.

L’Apero Francais at La Parisienne

The French have this “doing life” thing nailed. Wine and cheese before dinner? God yes. The apéritif, or apéro as it’s known in France, is a French evening ritual that combines drinks, food and friends.  La Parisienne has brought the ritual to Doha, offering a plate of meats and cheeses plus unlimited wine and French drinks for QR190. There are four different boards to choose from all with different combinations and flavors and the wine is free flowing between 6pm and 8pm nightly. While not quite a happy hour – it’s definitely a great place to catch up with friends or just have a quiet tipple. Oh la la!

Your September dining hit list - where to eat and drink in Doha this month

Must order: I loved the board with pate en croute and duck rillette – with freshly baked baguette and creamy butter, this was a real winner.

Maru

Doha’s love affair with Korean food has been taken up a notch. Located inside a fairly nondescript residential tower in West Bay, Maru is a surprising hit. Their focus is Korean style BBQ – with different packages available or a la carte. The QR250 option comes with marinated chicken and three cuts of beef, plus side dishes and you can also select one stew (we tried the kimchi one which was spicy and a lovely hit of sour).

your september dining hit list where to eat and drink in doha this month

Who doesn’t love the theater of the BBQ – you can do it yourself and ask for help from the friendly waiters. The BBQ was spot on in terms of flavor but we found the additional dishes like tempura prawns underwhelming. Expensive? Yes, but this could be the best Korean BBQ in town.

Must order: The Korean BBQ – worth the trip

Friday Brunch at Coral

This brunch at the Intercontinental Doha is a little sleeper hit. Not as loud and brash as other brunches, it offers a lovely selection of fresh food in a light and airy setting. Each week they have a different theme – which gives the chefs a chance to really let their imagination run riot.

your september dining hit list where to eat and drink in doha this month

The week I visited I sampled their fare, the theme was cheese. There was a burrata station, dishes with cheese incorporated and of course, a whole cheese board. All dishes were cooked with care and the service was spot on. This is just unpretentious food done well. Great for families or big groups – it also is a great option for couples.

Must order: Each week is a different theme but you can’t go past their hot dishes. you might get lucky and chance upon their giant paella dish – stuffed full of seafood.

Your October Hit List – Where to Eat and Drink in Doha This Month

We are at the pointy end of the year and for foodies this is great news. The weather starts to change oh so slightly, events start rolling into the city and this is the time when new menus, new restaurants and more start to open. So here is your October Hit List – where to eat and drink in Doha this month…

1. Pizza Box

Another pizza place…yes. But this one is a little different. It offers New York style pizza – the pie is larger, the dough thinner and the toppings a bit more eclectic. You can buy by the slice or the whole pie. Toppings include traditional pepperoni, a supreme and even a cheeseburger pizza (with Big Mac sauce). Sides are equally good – frickles (fried pickles) are the right mix of salt and vinegar, their pizza knots are carby and delicious dough balls you can dip in marinara sauce. The interiors are fun and New York themed but they also deliver all over Doha. This isn’t a chain – it’s a local start up, it’s amazing to see more like this. I’m a fan.

Pizza - the Top Doha Dining Trends of 2019 Revealed

Must order: The pepperoni pizza and the fried pickles

2. B Lounge

The much anticipated Doha outpost of the Buddha Bar franchise has finally opened at the Ritz Carlton Doha. Gone is the dingy Admirals Bar with its eclectic clientele and cheap beer. The transformation of this venue is astounding. They have added a sushi bar and seating upstairs plus expanded the two terraces. In winter I predict they will be THE place to be seen and seen and seen. The ground floor seating is tight but the decoration makes up for it – cosy tables a deux plus bigger options for groups. The centerpiece is a sleek rose gold bar for people watching. The food? Well executed renditions of crowd pleasing pan Asian favorites.

A fried lobster dumpling is plump and brimming with flavor. Their signature chicken salad is a riot of flavors and textures. A robata grill Teriyaki chicken bathed in sauce and perfectly pitched while their sushi was fresh and beautifully presented. I do think the starters and sushi were stronger than the mains, and you could easily enjoy a dinner of shared smaller plates with their excellent and fun cocktails. For wine fans, they have an in-house sommelier – a rarity in Doha and they are hoping to expand their wine offering in coming months. Prices are as expected for a five star hotel restaurant and as the weather cools, it may just be that perfect outdoor venue.

Must order: the chicken salad and lobster dumplings

3. Ambar

The Mandarin Oriental quietly opened their sleek bronzed bar last month and I am kind of glad people are slow to respond. But it’s time to give it some exposure! It’s a gem of a venue – larger than expected and a lot of effort and thought has gone int the menu and the design. The cocktail list contains some drinks – including liqueurs aged in clay pots – I’ve not seen in Doha before.

Your October Hit List - Where to Eat and Drink in Doha This Month

They make their own limoncello and also use honey from the hotel’s own bees in many drinks. My advice though? Come for the cocktails and the relaxed vibe and stay for the food. Spanish inspired small plates like a criminally tender braised octopus and a firey perfectly pitched prawn dish. This place will be very popular very soon – visit now and snag your favorite seat.

Must order: Everything. No really.

4. Toro Toro Saturday Lunch

I’m going out on a limb here and calling this restaurant Doha’s most improved for 2019.After an identity crisis (was it a restaurant? Was it a bar?) it’s now back on track – a new chef and new energy. They have now added a Saturday brunch to their offering and I am here for it. In fact, I liked it so much I went two weeks in a row. Served a la carte style, the menu is a greatest hits of their repertoire. Cheesy and gooey corn pancakes with a chilli jam, smokey guacamole and unlimited BBQ meats if you have room. The dining room really is a different beast during the daylight hours – drenched in sunshine and the water views help as well. Lunch is QR295 and drinks are a la carte. I can’t think of a better place for a lazy weekend afternoon of good food and views.

Must order: They will bring all the things – but don’t leave without the cheesy pancakes.

5. Autumn Menu at IDAM

It’s a good month when I get to dine at IDAM. This place never fails to impress me with its attention to detail and open embrace of local flavors. The autumn menu is another tour de force – featuring sea bream with a Swiss chard and plum sauce, an almost too pretty to eat beetroot salad and a take on seafood risotto using nutty spelt grains.

Where to eat and drink in doha in October

The small touches like additional dishes (like a wafer thin small plate of smoked kingfish), the trolley of small treats like house made marshmallows and the matching juices – they all make this a truly unique experience.

Must order: They have set menus or you can order a la carte – but I suggest the team do the honors for you

So there it is – your October hit list – where to eat and drink in Doha this month! I’m looking forward to seeing you around!

Seven Places in Doha to Dine Outdoors This Winter

$

The weather is cooling – that means chances for swanning around outside and not end up bathed in a sheen of sweat are high. Doha winters make the summers almost bearable (and I will fight anyone who disagrees). Here are my 7 top places in Doha to dine outdoors this winter… catch you outside..

1. Mykonos Doha

It seems like Mykonos has been around forever and there is a good reason why its outside terrace is packed nightly in the cooler months. With a pool view and a bit of an island feel, the food is Greek staples like moussaka and grilled lamb, it’s hard to look past. Friday and Saturday lunchtime is the perfect opportunity to sample the menu and the sun drenched terrace. Order a bunch of mezze, a glass of Greek wine and soak up the vibe.

2. The Terrace at CUT

CUT’s terrace has one of the most unusual views in the city – across the lagoon to the futuristic and ever-changing Lusail skyline. The terrace will be opening in early December (it closes for the summer). You can expect some special menus including a BBQ and of course their signature steaks and inventive starters. Combine a night on their terrace with their fabulous happy hour and you will be a happy foodie.

3. La Mar

This restaurant just has the “it” factor – fresh, innovative Peruvian food and a stunning location. They are clearly doing something right, it is one of the few venues in town without a happy hour or business lunch. And yet, it’s always heaving. Their revamped menu has some great new dishes and this place is great for an al fresco lunch or a cosy dinner. Their terrace, and the one upstairs at Manko affords a lovely view of the bay and a sea breeze. It was a natural inclusion in my 7 top places in Doha to dine outdoors this winter.

4. Mosaic at Mandarin Oriental

This place is proof that great food and views doesn’t start and end in the West Bay/Pearl nexus. Their wrap around terrace has views of the Msheirb rooftops and the Corniche. And the food – a tour de force of the Silk Route countries like India and China – takes things to the next level. For something more casual, their outdoor Aqua Lounge also on the eighth floor has both cosy cubby holes and more family friendly tables plus a menu of Spanish tapas.

Mosiac at Mandarin Oriental - 7 places in doha to dine outside this winter

5. L’a Pastisserie at IDAM

Praise should go to IDAM who continue to come up with incredible offers to bring more people to this location. Every afternoon IDAM between 3.30pm and 5.30pm (except Fridays) you can sample some of the inventive creations from their pastry team as well as drinking in the restaurant’s views. At just QR120 for two people, you can indulge in a tea or coffee each, a dessert each and a selection of pastries to share plus water or a mocktail.

Idam Doha - 7 places to dine outside in Doha this winter

All this is served on their terrace which has an uninterrupted view of the Corniche and West Bay skyline. It’s really quite a special experience and honestly, the value is hard to beat.

6. O’Glacee Poolside at Al Wadi Hotel

The Al Wadi by M Gallery is a bit of an underrated gem in this city. They continue to serve up great food in a charming setting. Their poolside restaurant, O’Glacee, has a mix of tables and sofas for lounging is a little slice of heaven in the city. The outdoor menu includes five kinds of bruschetta, stuffed squid and steaks grilled to order from their outside kitchen. They serve shisha and alcohol and I was considering keeping it to myself… but this place deserves some love.

7. Boho Social

I’m saving the newest and shiniest thing for last. Boho Social has to be one of the most eclectic and beautifully envisioned restaurants in the city. While it’s interiors are all turquoise, pinks and riots of colors and patterns, the outdoor space takes this to the next level. With high backed cane chairs, jewel colored cushions and views across to the Pearl and West Bay, I’m considering taking up residence just for the outdoor spaces alone.

Boho Social - 7 places to dine outside in Doha this winter

The menu is as diverse as the aesthetic – a mix of Arabic, Asian leaning into South American. Order a bunch of small plates like the moreish cassava croquettes and fresh cabbage rolls, cosy up and try not to fall in love with the space. It’s open for lunch and dinner but in January will start their breakfast menu, which will be a game changer for the cooler months. This is the restaurant the mostly average dining scene in Katara needs.

Your February Hit List – Where to Eat and Drink in Doha this Month

And here we are – my inaugural 2020 Hitlist – where to eat and drink in Doha in February. After the longest January in the history of Januarys, there is a lot to be excited about!

New happy hours, new restaurants and a couple of surprises – here is the list you have been waiting for…

La Bodega Negra

Hot off the plane from London’s Soho, this Mexican joint has won me over with its atmosphere and well executed food. It’s located adjacent to the less than swoonworthy HuQQA at the St Regis Doha.

When I say this place is about the “vibe”, I mean it. The bar area is like a really happening house party, retro hits and lots of comfy couches. The dining area a bit like the family home (except for the wild art) of your really wealthy mate from university.

The two-page menu includes takes on classics – think baja fish tacos and fresh tuna tostadas and slow cooked beef barbacoa. The food is by no means perfect – I felt the beef barbacoa was a bit one note. But other dishes impressed. Beware, the spice content is high but that just how I like it. Service is casual without being familiar.

Your February Hit List - Where to Eat and Drink in Doha this Month

Must order: The spicy prawn tacos and the guacamole.

Paper Moon

This is a perennial favorite and has earned an early 2020 shoutout for two very good reasons. Their business lunch – three courses for QR89 – is incredible value. Each course has at least six options and servings are generously full sized.

Your February Hit List - Where to Eat and Drink in Doha this Month

The second reason? They now have an alcohol licence. Yep. The unicorn – a non-hotel restaurant with booze – is real. Prices are on the high side at the moment but a happy hour is coming soon. And that secret garden-style terrace is the perfect spot for an after work drink.

Your February Hit List - Where to Eat and Drink in Doha this Month

Must order: the beautifully tender and perfectly battered frito misto…and a glass of wine!

The Kitchen at the Hilton Residences The Pearl

Pearl residents rejoice! You have a new dining option with the opening of the Hilton Residences The Pearl. Their all day dining restaurant, The Kitchen, has a daily breakfast offering that is as pocket friendly as it is delicious. As well as their usual buffet of hot and cold items, they also offer a range of a la carte dishes like eggs benedict, avo toast, pancakes and oatmeal. Servings are on the smaller side, but order a few to share.

Your February Hit List - Where to Eat and Drink in Doha this Month

Hold onto your hats…the best is yet to come. It’s QR110 all in – that includes barista made coffee (no crappy machines), drinks like sparkling water and of course the food. Add in their beautiful poolside terrace, and a quirky dining room, and you have a great weekend meeting spot.

PS at the time of going to press (I’m so old school) their liquor licence was on the verge of being granted.

Must order: The egg tacos

Grill Night at Pearl Social

I’ve said this before, Pearl Social is the best restaurant in Doha no one knows about. Their Thursday night Grill Night proves that this place has some of the best food in the city. Served as an all you can eat fixed menu, it is a tour de force. Their portobello mushroom burger is a veggie style meaty delight – a juicy umami bomb and packed with flavor.

The star of the menu is their sea bass, served with a perfectly tangy/aniseedy fennel salad. Props also to their strip loin, cooked to order on the outside BBQ and served with a jammy roasted garlic. The menu comes with a variety of sides as well as a bottle of wine (yep – a bottle). All for QR700 for two people. Go. Please.

Must order: Everything. Just tell them to bring it all.

Ambar at the Mandarin Oriental

I‘ve extolled the virtues of Ambar before but I’m here to remind you that it is probably one of the best value bars in town. In a city where an Aperol Spritz can cost you QR148, their regular prices are a breath of fresh air. QR35 for beers, QR35 for spirits and mixers and some great wines from QR140 a bottle. Aaaand all cocktails are QR70.

Add into this mix a beautifully designed bar, house-made limoncello and some first rate Spanish-inspired bar food, and you have one great night. They don’t do ladies nights and

Must order: Any of the house-created spirits/cocktails.

La Mar Happy Hour

This is breaking news. La Mar’s location on the beach is seriously sexy and now it has its’ own happy hour. Launching 6 February, the happy hour runs from a very reasonable 4pm to 7pm Thursdays to Saturdays. Cocktails are QR49, bottled beer for QR39 and bites from QR39. Thirsty Thursday indeed!

Your February Hit List - Where to Eat and Drink in Doha this Month
Oh La La La Mar

Must order: The bites will be as good as the booze, so order up!

There it is folks – plenty to get stuck into and more to come!
